As an active fighter, yes.
As a retired fighter 20 years removed, not always. Unless you're being completely exposed like Naseem HamedComment

I don't think that's true at all, I mean for a while after the last fight it's how many will remember a fighter but over time I don't think it would/should matter much when the overall greatness of a fighter is being considered.
Edit: I am a dumbass, i completely misunderstood the question. I initially thought it meant the last fight of one's career, now I'm thinking it means the most recent fight in a career that hasn't ended.
