There should be a weight adjustment at Welter and Jr Middle...

I know it's a bold proposal with all the history at 147lbs, but hear me out.

Currently and in the past there have been many fighters too big for the 140lbs class but rather small for the 147lbs class. Fighters from back in the day like Pernell, Meldrick and Buddy McGirt and currently, Floyd, Berto and Miguel Cotto come to mind.

Huge Welters that come to mind: Margarito, Williams, Clottey and Cintron (who came into the ring tonight at 169lbs; Clottey entered the ring against Corrales at 170lbs in a Welterweight fight).

147 has been a weight class where really big fighters have been able to cut weight and be matched up with much smaller fighters. I feel an adjustment of a couple of pounds from Welter to Jr Middle would create a more level playing field for the "small" Welters in the division.

Welterweight should be 145lbs and Jr Middle should be 152lbs.

Currently there is a 7 pound difference between Jr Welter and Welter, as well as Welter and Jr Middle. However, there is only a six pound difference between Jr Middle and Middle. What sense does that make?

Making Welter 145 and Jr Middle 152 makes more sense to me. The huge Welters would be fighting at a more natural weight class of 152lbs and the smaller Welters would better matched against fighter's thier own size.

So the excuses Angulo lost because of Cintron being the bigger man and and not Angulo being able to be faster then someone who outweighs him?

WTF are you talking about? I was thinking of the small Welters when I thought up this thread topic.

Welterweight is a historic division, I don't think the weight limit should change for that weight class.

I hear ya, but history aside, an adjustment makes sense.

They added the incremental weight divisions around the original divisions of Lightwieght, Welterweight and Middleweight. Welter should have been lowered by a pound or two with the introduction of Jr Welter and Jr Middle.
