Antonio Margarito? A coward? A cheat?

Are you people literally that fickle.
The man was planning to use plaster. I don't think there is a more cowardly act in the sport of boxing. If he had not been caught. Mosley could have gotten brain damage or worst he could have died.
What Margarito done is easily one of the most cowardly act in boxing. He will make the Hall of Shame IMO
If me and you were to fight and I planned to use knuckle busters, wouldn't that make me a coward not wanting to fight fairlyComment

The fact he had plaster in his gloves is a disgrace. I lost all respect for him.
Anyone who has put on a pair gloves will tell you that there is no way Margo did not know something was in his gloves.
Shane left him in the ring with a green pepper hanging out his ass.Comment

thats my thoughts exactly, its not like cheating in other sports; taking steroids in olympics, faking fouls in football etc...no one can get seriously hurt from that other than the cheater..this is differentComment

I might be reaching here but there were a lot of things surrounding that night. Tony was not 100% that night, mentally nor physically. His mind wasn't in the fight, I saw him come out with a look of defeat, his whole corner was nervous, I know people will say that it was due to the fact that he got caught cheating but think about it, a boxer needs to be 110% mentally prepared before a fight, there can't be any interruptions, it must be nervewrecking to come out specially to a fight as big as it was against Mosley, a full house Staples Center, the burden of carrying the country of Mexico on his back and then having to go through that whole hand wrap mental disruption before such a big fight, whether or not he knew about the wraps, that has got to be a lot of pressure for a fighter, and it happened minutes before the fight, he probably didn't even have time to warm up.
Secondly it was reported a few weeks before the fight that he wasn't in the best shape either, that he struggled with his weight and it was obvious, even on the weight in he didn't look confident, and came in a pound less than 147, and Tony never misses the mark. Then the whole wrap **** after the fight, people passing around evidence like a hot potato, the lack of proof before the hearing about what kind of substance was on the wraps, the whole thing was a circus act. HBO doing a piece of the Balco incident with Mosley prior to the fight, how ironic don't you think?
I think that HBO and the California commissioning just pulled the trigger to set an example that boxing is a "clean sport", since a week prior to this there was the scandal in baseball with Arod and the other players, and who better to put on the hot seat than a not so "skillful" Mexican boxer who was the major underdog 6 months ago against one of the biggest HBO house fighters Miguel Cotto. I don't discard the possibility that Capetillo did try to alter the wraps somehow but it was not as big as they claimed to be, more like adding extra gauze on the gloves but plaster of paris?
Tony's camp must have known that he was not 100% prior to the fight, there weren't many reports of his training camp, and they knew Mosley has a solid chin and not the underdog everyone thought he would be. I mean everyone thought Mosley had nothing left after that lackluster performance against Mayorga, I was one of the people who wrote him off, but he proved everyone wrong and fought a perfect fight. But let me say this, if none of these setbacks would of happened, it would of been a much different fight, Tony wasn't 100% when he fought Mosley and the wraps had nothing to do with it.Last edited by ShalafiV.2; 05-29-2009, 08:24 AM.Comment

First of all, I just wanna say, I ain't trying to justify Margs attempt to cheat against Mosley. Just before anyone thinks that.
Anyway, before the Mosley fight, he was respected, a man who once fought fully grown men as a boy, a man who would walk through hell to get to you, a man who would never give up, a real all heart warrior. Then, we find out he cheated, and that all goes. Now, fair enough... what he tried to do was bad, but still, don't you find it funny,
A man who would load his gloves to win, would be the same boy who fought fully grown men at the age of 16... a man who came out for the 9th round against Mosley knowing that he would be stopped, but still fighting on.
I still have some respect for Antonio Margarito, he still is a tough guy, he still has heart, I still respect his will of iron, his granite chin... the dude is tough, and he did it the hard way most of his career. Just because he tried to cheat once, doesn't mean we should trash his entire career. Plaster in his gloves didn't help him walk through the punches of huge hitters like Cotto and Cintron, he still showed a great chin against Mosley... how many guys would've lasted that long against such sustained punishment?
I ain't a big fan of Tony, I ain't tryin' to justify him cheating.. but, don't just hate because it's popular to do so. Think about it...
Would a coward have came out for the 9th round?
Loading your gloves ia cowardly act.Comment

Great post mate, I wish more people shared your vision and objectivity. Very impartial and well written post, unfortunately most people only read the fine print and automatically hate for no real reason, whether is spite, sourness, jealousy, you name it, it's part of being human but some people are just more ignorant than others, green K coming your way.Comment

After replaying in my mind what Cottos face looked like after their fight... it's all I ever think about when thinking of Margarito... It seems as though there was added damage, over the top damage done to Cotto. It wasn't proven, we don't know... but damn. It's hard to get by that and look at Margarito in good light.Comment
