Woods And Cloud To Contest Vacate Title

Clinton Woods is set to face American Tavoris Cloud for the vacant IBF light-heavyweight crown, BBC Radio Sheffield has confirmed.

Woods will get his chance after champion Chad Dawson decided to relinquish the IBF title rather than face mandatory challenger Tavoris Cloud.

Former champion Woods lost his IBF title to Antonio Tarver in April 2008. Tarver in turn was relieved of the title by Dawson vis a 12 round points decision six months later.

Explaining the latest situation and how Woods gets the opportunity to regain the title, his promoter Dennis Hobson told the BBC: "Clinton fought a final eliminator and that has paid off".

"Woods beat Elvir Muriqi in Jersey to move to No.2 in the IBF rankings and now setting up the chance to fight for the now vacated belt.

Hobson added:"We don’t know where it’s going to be yet, I spoke to Tavoris Cloud’s people and we get on very well, but it is business.

"Hopefully Clinton will do the business this time whether it’s here or in the States and he regains his title.

Its looks like the vacant title fight could take place in September.

Pretty interesting fight, pitting the exprience of Woods against the young hungry lion in Cloud. I feel with Cloud's youth and hunger, he can win this, but Cloud has been out the ring since Augest last year. So rust may have gathered up.

Woods has fought some of the division's best over the years, and holds wins over Glen Johnson and Julio Cesar Gonzalez. He looked pretty solid in his last outing defeating the once touted Elvir Muriqi.

Tough one to call; Cloud is certainly a lot more likely to beat Woods than he would have been Dawson, but Woods is far from a push-over. It will be interesting to see where it happens, Clinton is not a big name even in the UK despite his achievements; witness his last fight in some Channel Islands hotel in front of 3 men and their dog.

By a nose I think Cloud's youth and desire over Woods' experience in a close UD.

On paper this is a close fight, but after seeing Woods' pathetic effort against Tarver, I'm reluctant to pick him against any decent opponent.

Last time Cloud had one of these fights, we were wondering if the experience of Gonzalez would be able to beat out the strength of Cloud... it didn't go well for Gonzalez.

Scott is right, Woods's effort against Tarver was pretty lame, but... he did beat Muriqi pretty convincingly, who Tarver struggled a bit with.

I guess we'll see, but I am definitely picking Cloud to beat Woods up and eventually stop him.

I really don't know why Woods is getting a shot at a belt at this point anyway. I'd give it to Yusaf Mack before Clinton Woods based on recent resume comparison.
