Hello Alfonso, welcome to 15rounds.com
Hi Anson,
Anson Wainwright - Firstly you got back in action when you beat Buendia the other week in Las Vegas, how did you feel it went? How is the cut from that fight looking?
Alfonso Gomez - The cut is fine. The stitches are out and it’s healing nicely. Buendia was tougher than I thought. He started strong but I felt I had him close to a KO in the 4th. Unfortunately, I got the cut which seems it gave Buendia more energy. The cut did block my vision at times but I was able to fight through it.
Anson Wainwright - It was your first fight since Cotto last year, did you fell you had any ring rust to shake off?
Alfonso Gomez - I did feel rusty but that’s normal for a year layoff. But now I’m back in the ring to keep active.
Anson Wainwright - Though it’s early days when are you looking to get back into action?
Alfonso Gomez - Maybe July or August.
Anson Wainwright - What have you done with yourself since the Cotto fight?
Alfonso Gomez - After the loss I got started with getting a release from Tournament of Contenders which took some time. Also, I got more involved with the band I’m part of, Hy3rid. Writing music. Making music.
Anson Wainwright - How good do you think Cotto is? Do you think he’ll beat Joshua Clottey in June?
Alfonso Gomez - Cotto is good. He has a tough fighter in Joshua Clottey who in part was able to give Antonio Margarito a run for his money, so we will see.
Anson Wainwright - You’ve never had anything given to you on a plate in your life. What can you tell us about your life from when you were growing up and how it took you into Boxing?
Alfonso Gomez - I definitely had a poor upbringing, but that didn’t stop my family for pursuing greater dreams and to fight for them. I, as a Mexican kid growing up in America, had to find a way to defend myself. And I took that into the ring.
Anson Wainwright - Back in January trainer Javier Ceptillo had to re-wrap Antonio Margarito’s glove over the infamous incident. Do you know either of those guys? What do you make of it?
Alfonso Gomez - Yes I know both of them, but I don’t know if their intentions where malicious or not. I as a boxer would know if my hand’s were wrapped with something different than previous times.
Anson Wainwright - Who was your Boxing hero?
Alfonso Gomez - Julio Cesar Chavez.
Anson Wainwright - If you could fight anyone who would it be? There seem like many very good option’s for you not least Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr? What about a fight in Britain with Ricky Hatton’s brother Matthew?
Alfonso Gomez - My manager, Gary Gittelsohn, tried getting a fight with Matthew Hatton for a possitlbe undercard of Pacquiao/Hatton but they declined. I still believe that would be a good fight, specially in the UK.
Anson Wainwright - How do you view your days on Contender? Your really made a name for yourself on that programme didn’t you.
Alfonso Gomez - I had a lot of fun doing The Contender and more after it aired. It gave me a big boost in popularity compared to boxers who fight until they get their chance.
Anson Wainwright - What do you considered your best win in your career?
Alfonso Gomez - Definitely my victory against Arturo Gatti is the highlight of my career so far.
Anson Wainwright - Finally do you have any words for your fans?
Alfonso Gomez - I want thank them for their support. They can always stay updated with my life on *******, tweeter, and my own personal website www.AlfonsoSGomez.com.
Thanks for your time Alfonso.
