Roach: "The easiest fight out of those three, in my opinion, is Mayweather"

Freddie Roach sees Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the least troublesome among fighters being groomed to face Manny Pacquiao.

"The easiest fight out of those three, in my opinion, is Mayweather," Roach told ace fight scribe Robert Morales in boxingscene. "The other two guys are way stronger, way more physical. Look at Mayweather; he struggled against (Oscar) De La Hoya and his fight with (Ricky) Hatton was competitive."

"And Manny killed both of those guys. I don’t care what the excuses are. A fact is a fact. He (Mayweather) won a split decision against De La Hoya. We didn’t lose a round to either," Roach said.

Pacquiao has been penciled to return on Oct. 17 against a foe yet to be named following an easy two-round destruction of Hatton last May 2.

Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, Shane Mosley of the US and Mayweather are frontrunners although Top Rank chief Bob Arum believes a Mayweather fight with Pacquiao is not very likely to happen within the year.

Cotto fights Joshua Clottey on June 13 in New York, while Mayweather meets Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico on July 18 in Las Vegas and Team Pacquiao should be able to reach a decision as to who and where Pacquiao’s fight will be immediately afterwards.

Mayweather is being represented by Leonard Ellerbe and Al Haymon in the negotiating table, while Mosley is under the promotional banner of the De La Hoya-owned Golden Boy Promotions and Cotto is with Top Rank like Pacquiao.

Before his premature retirement in 2008, Mayweather was universally recognized as the best fighter in the world pound-for-pound.

Pacquiao is now the holder of that mythical title after a string of impressive wins against Marquez, David Diaz, De La Hoya and Hatton.

Pacquiao will be at ringside at Madison Square Garden when Cotto slugs it out with Clottey since he will root for Filipino title challenger Rodel Mayol in the undercard.

Cmon Roach. If you're gonna talk smack, at least be consistant. You're sounding like Floyd "Contradictions" Mayweather right now. A few weeks ago u said that Floyd would be the most troublesome for Pac given his style, and it would make for an ugly fight because Floyd comes to be elusive and potshot.

I wrote this on a different thread about this same article:

What did I tell you guys. Did you hear what Roach just said about Floyd's weight? He's way smaller and way less stronger then the WW's. He said that Floyd could easily make WW but is just lazy. Stop trying to act like Floyd is this super big monster. He's small. He's P4P the smallest guy in boxing. If he was at 140 right now he would be just a middle of the pack guy in terms of size if that. Before the Hatton fight there people said that they wouldnt fight any other WW but they will fight Floyd because they dont beleive he is a WW and now Roach is saying the same exact thing. I cant beleive that fans & media overlook this but the people who really know boxing dont. They know the difference in sizes & strength.

Roach is really confused right now because its a catch 22. He knows that in terms of style that Floyd is by far the hardest for Pac to beat out of the group. The JMM fights tell you that. However, he also knows that Floyd is physicaly much less imposing then the other 2 which gives them a huge advantate over Floyd. He's got to weigh which one is the better risk. Its also funny when he said that fighters arent scared of anyone but any other time he says Floyd is ducking all these guys and is scared to face them

floyd's style might give pacquiao the most trouble......but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be the easiest opponent for pacquiao.

if pacquiao's list of possible opponents is cotto , mosley and mayweather , mayweather would probably be the easiest of the 3 for pacquiao.

not that pacquiao would win nor would it mean cotto and mosley are better.

but for a small guy like manny , mayweather might be easier than the other 2.

A month ago, Roach was saying Floyd would be too troublesome with his counterpunching. He needs to refer to what he said in the past to explain in detail what he believes could happen in the future.

Contradictions arent whats hot in the streets right now.

just because he would be troublesome doesn't mean he won't be the easiest.

you have to take into account who the other possible opponents are.

if it's cotto and mosley , i can see how he would think floyd was the easier fight.

i agree, floyd is the easiest among the 3...cotto and mosely are dangerous punchers willing to engage.....floyd is satisfied with potshotting which will not do damage to pac at all...
