Why Are We Obsessed With Weight?

Every day there is threads on boxer's making "***** Moves" and "hand picking opponents" etc... As a boxing fan I'm excited at the fights that are happening and the prospect of all the fights that could potentially be made! Why should we the fans of boxing care so much about what weight the fights are happening at when the boxers themselves are happy?

I've seen threads calling Cotto a "*****" for wanting to fight Pac at 147 and threads calling Mayweather a "*****" for fighting Marquez at 144 instead of 140! If Marquez is happy fighting at 144 why should we have a problem with it? Marquez called Mayweather out and Pac and Roach called Mosley and Cotto out! If Pac and Marquez want these guys then they should step up in weight. If they can't perform at the higher weight (Pac has shown he can) then they shouldn't be calling out fighters at the higher weights!

As fans of this sport shouldn't we be more excited at fighters with great talent as each of these guys have fighting each other and creating these big fights? Instead of moaning about what weight each fighter should fight at!

For the record I do believe Mayweather should fight Cotto and Mosley before he retires!

P.S If Mayweather hadn't answered Marquez's challenge then I guarantee people would've said Mayweather was ducking Marquez!

It's ******. Fighters should just fight in their own ****in weight classes. If you need a catchweight cuz you can't become a full fledged fighter in the next division, **** it, stay in the division your at cuz you ain't physically outgrown it yet. This **** just makes for unhealthy/dangerous situations for fighters. I dunno why so many cats on here approve of this ****.

Most people skip around the fact that On Fight Night the fighters weigh more than the sanctioned weights for the division.

        It truly makes no sense.

i agree that catchweights are ******ed. only in boxing is there this kind of B.S. there are so many weight divisions as it is.

with that said, i think talking about weight is more relevant than arguing about PPV sales, how much money a particular fighter can generate, and how much money a particular fighter should/will make.

Paul Williams is a perfect example that I don't feel all fighters can only compete at one weight class. In Floyd's case everyone seems to want him to fight at his highest possible effective weight, welterweight, mainly because the bigger names are there. I guess the obsession with weight comes from instances like Oscar moving South a division and looking dead, etc.

c'mon all of boxing history is based on weight classes.

mayweather has been called out by all kinds of fighters and now he fights a guy who called him out 2 weight classes below. that is the lamest excuse. i really don't need to run down the list again do I?

catchweight fights are terrible for boxing.

Cotto Vs Pacquiao: Is a good example of why a catchweight is good in this situation becuase it allows 2 greater fighters from different divisions a chance to square off against one another. A catchweight at around 144 in this situation is more then fair. It's not to close to WW and not close to LWW, it's nautral. So now the playing field is equal instead of fighting a Natural WW at his weight or a natural LWW at his weight -- the catchweigt comes into play to even this out so no one fighter has an advantage over the other. It's a winning proposition when done right.

Now in the case of Juan Manuel Marquez Vs. Floyd Mayweather jr.: The catchweight is a losing proposition for either fighter becuase there so far apart from there respected weight divisions that not even a catch weight makes a win, win proposition. The gaps are just to far and wide apart. This is mismatch...plain and simple. I know JMM called him out, but I think a lot of that was just trying to entice Pacquiao For a third meeting, and a JMM vs. FMJ is what amounted out of it.

That depends on the fans perspective. Some fans are going to like the catchweight and some are not. For me I like the catchweight because it gives great fighters from other divisons a chance to fight one another at a level playing field -- without one or the other have a distinct advantage over the other where they fighting at there natural weight. Hence the catchweight evens the score and should produce a good fight. When it's done right in the case of Cotto Vs. Pacquiao. When it's done the way it was done with Marquez and Mayweather, it's no good because even at a catch weight marquez still has to go up two weight classes and is still at a disadvantage. Catchweights are good when jumping from 1 divison not 2 or 3 divisons.

For the record I do believe Mayweather should fight Cotto and Mosley before he retires!

Well, if he wants to be consider the best ever, then I think he has no choice...somewhere along the line he's going to have to fight the best WW's. He can't dodge them forever without take scrutiny from the critics and the fans.

Some people might have, but not me. Then again it's all in a fans perspective of how he or she wants to look at the situation. For me I think the fights a mismatch and I would have respected (Mayweather Jr.) a lot more if he would have took the fight with Mosley, rather then taken on fighter that is 2 weight classes below him.
