Paul needs to get in line. I like the kid but in his very short stint at the top he's already suffered a loss, then languished in inactivity when the welterweight boys decided he wasn't worth the risk.
Cotto is coming off a loss, so with Floyd's ego I don't think he's going to get a fight until he beats Clottey and reestablishes the status he had before the Margarito fight.
Mosley is getting older every day. If he signs a fight and losses it, he'll be off of Mayweather's list, too.
Really, when it comes down to it, the boxing landscape changes and I feel like Floyd's been in the game long enough to realize that. His list may look like this now:
Pacquiao
Cotto
Mosley
Ortiz
But we don't know what'll happen. If Clottey wins the Cotto fight Miguel is off the top tier for the forseeable future. That would make Clottey a possible opponent, assuming he can defend another time or two before he proposes a dance with Floyd. If Mosley gets dusted, due to age, by some top 10 welterweight he fights to stay busy, he's off the list, too. What if, due to losses, the hit list becomes as such:
Pacquiao (this will probably happen I think)
Clottey
Berto (let's say he goes after Mosley and, because Shane has been sitting idle, gets a close win).
Floyd fights Pac in Decemeber.
Clottey beats Cotto, then has a defense against someone, and Floyd takes him on in May-July 2010.
Berto fights Shane sometime after the Urango fight, around the Clottey defense (after he beats Cotto in our alternate reality) and then Floyd fights him at the end of 2010.
Floyd fights a young lion like Ortiz and retires in 2011.
So, instead of his resume being:
Pacquiao
Cotto
Mosley
It's:
Pacquiao
Clottey
Berto
Ortiz
End of career.
The boxing landscape is what changed in that scenario, all Floyd did was sit on his hands and see how it played out. How much **** will he get? Or will everyone respect those wins?
Again...just food for thought.Comment
