Don't look now folks but it seems like Manny Pacquiao is actually included in the upcoming Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez fight on July 18 titled "Number One vs. Numero Uno." How can any boxing fan really overlook the involvement of Pacquiao in this fight though? It is titled Number One vs Numero Uno after all right? And everybody knows this is the fight of the number one contenders to Pacquiao's Pound for Pound crown.
Don't fret, your friendly neighborhood Fight Sports Examiner has just uncovered the facts behind the hype. How can we have been so blind that behind all of this is Pacquiao himself. What other reason do they have to announce this bout on the same day of the Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao card if Pacquiao isn't in it with them right? Steal Pacquiao's thunder? No way! Not Golden Boy Promotions or Mayweather... they wouldn't do that! From day one of the press tour, why do you think Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been saying all they can to taint Pacquiao's accomplishments?
Fooled be not. Pacquiao is definitely part of this card. Perhaps he probably plays a bigger role in this bout than Mayweather Jr.and Marquez themselves and the funny thing about it is that Pacquiao is thousands of miles away and has not said a word about these same boxing superstars that have been talking about him on a constant basis as of late. And that's I guess why fans love Pacquiao.
Pacquiao is a mean and nasty competitor in the ring but a humble and soft-spoken person outside it. He lets his fists do the talking and I can not recall a time that he has verbally disrespected any of his opponents. You can tell with the way Golden Boy has been trying to pull down Pacquiao that some of it is probably personal or then again, he is wearing his promoter's hat in this fight after all so he is entitled to say whatever I guess.
After losing the chance to solely promote Pacquiao, who chose to stay with Top Rank and Bob Arum, Golden Boy Promotions have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Pacquiao and they all keep coming back like broken china. Pacquiao has smashed and demolished every single challenge Oscar De la Hoya and his crew have put infront of him- including the boss himself. So what else is there left for them to do? If you can't beat him in the ring I guess, then try to beat him outside of it. What they don't realize however is that, the more they try and verbally attck Pacquiao, the more they make him bigger and look better as if he's the "Robin Hood" of boxing. As if the big wigs on boxing politics keep trying to put him down yet the masses and the people know the truth and it's Pacquiao's body of work that they truly listen to.
It really amazes me, how De la Hoya, Marquez and Mayweather all seem like they are fighting a common foe instead of one another. If you watch Mayweather's interviews with ESPN, his facial expression changes and he starts stuttering every time he is asked about Pacquiao. From day one they have designed this fight to try and upstage Pacquiao and Hatton's May 2 mega fight promarily because they want to dethrone Pacquiao. But so far all that they have proven is how big of a star Manny Pacquiao really is right now that even when they say this is the biggest fight of the year, they still can't escape the shadow of the best Pound for Pound fighter in the planet the way HBO cameras can't escape Pacquiao's PR guy they call the "Pambansang Anino". Hype can only get you so far. If Floyd, Marquez and De la Hoya truly want to upstage Pacquiao, they can hype this fight all they want but at the end of the day, fans want to see action in the ring and early previews of this bout have a lot of people snoozing already. Boxing fans know Floyd doesn't really engage and fight. He runs around the ring and has given fans more boring fights than exciting ones. Marquez on the other hand is an excellent counter-puncher, but if Floyd doesn't engage him, where will the action begin?
I guess all I can say is that these people need some more time. It's probably hard to adjust to living in the shadows of a little man from a third-world country across the globe. Besides, Pacquiao has stated he's going to retire soon to run for politics in his home country. Maybe then, they won't have to worry about him, but until then, I guess we can expect to see and hear more of Manny Pacquiao's shadow cast in a lot of these boxing events.
If you read this article thinking there is some kind of news saying Pacquiao will be fighting in the card of Mayweather and Marquez, I apologize if the title was misleading. I am a victim as well because everytime they promote this fight, it seems like Manny Pacquiao is always included in it. Any rational boxing fans would know it won't make sense though. Can you imagine what the split would be if Pacquiao was indeed part of this?
