MANILA, May 19 –- Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez has never ran out of venue to utter his frustration of perhaps convincing the boxing world that he can beat Manny Pacquiao despite four knockdowns he absorbed from the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter in their last two meetings.
Marquez found venue during a fan rally in Los Angeles for his upcoming fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. to release his pestering toward the Filipino boxing icon whom he accused of running from him.
“Pacquiao keeps running from me and he does not want to face me a third time. He just keeps running away,” Marquez said as quoted by philboxing.com report.
“So, I decided to fight the very, very best and that is Floyd Mayweather,” Marquez added.
The first fight of Marquez and Pacquiao on May 8, 2004 ended in a draw despite the three knockdowns scored by the Filipino ring icon in the first round. Later, one of the judges admitted mistake in scoring that could have given the fight to Pacquiao.
The second fight four years later was a close split decision in favor of Pacquiao who stripped Marquez of the WBC 130-pound (super featherweight) title.
Pacquiao vacated the super featherweight title three months later and made an impressive debut in the 135-pound division after dethroning WBC lightweight champion David Diaz via a ninth round stoppage victory on June 28, 2008.
With the retirenment of undefeated Mayweather, the Filipino boxing superstar grabbed the prestige as world’s best pound-for-pound fighter which he solidified when moved to 145-pound to retire Oscar Dela Hoya in the eighth of their 12-round encounter.
Last May 2, Pacquiao convincingly kept the world’s best pound-for-pound belt and eventually won the IBO light welterweight win a second round knockout victory against Ricky Hatton.
