Mayweather-Marquez: Is This Another Attempt For Floyd to duck the Top Welterweights?
By Axel Bowen-Dale: Many people have split views when it comes to the upcoming Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Floyd Mayweather fight. Some people believe Floyd is a coward for fighting the lightweight mexican when the prospects for epic PPV welterweight boxing are there for the taking - A fight with Shane Mosley or Miguel Cotto would be colossal in terms of PPV buys, not to mension in terms of Floyd’s legacy and true rise to international stardom.
The keys to the door of greatness have been hanging infront of Mayweathers face for years. It’s called the Welterweight division.
But aren’t people underestimating Marquez? Anyone who knows anything knows Marquez is a brilliant fighter - a tactical, fearless veteran.
If I had to put my money on anyone beating Mayweather, I would probably be split between Marquez, Mosley, or Williams.
I actually believe Manny Pacquiao would have a hard day at the office fighting mayweather; due to the fact he’s going to have to use his brain more than his muscle. Freddy Roach can only take you so far remember. Pacquiao is no master tactician, Pacquiao is too much of a “do as you’re told” kinda’ guy - a soldier if you like; and would have alot of difficulty breaking a solid mayweather defence in my view.
Marquez on the otherhand would keep an open mind while fighting Mayweather, taking risks trying to exchange with mayweather though staying back to use his footwork and counters when he needs to. I honestly think Mayweather has no idea what he has got himself into in picking Marquez for a comeback fight after a two year layoff.
Juan Manuel Marquez is relentless and fights to win from the first bell. Win Mayweather may - but stop Marquez he will not. Two Pacquiao onslaughts couldn’t stop this machine, Floyd’s 20 punches per round wouldn’t have me betting a Mayweather KO, that’s for sure.
This fight is big. I think Mayweather’s taking more risks fighting this little Mexican than he would be in fighting one of the slower welterweights. I think a fight with Cotto or Mosley would be another repeat of the De La Hoya attempt to beat Floyd; too stationary, too slow, too frustrating.
Mayweather will really have to show his colours to pull this one off. If anyone expects an easy Mayweather UD win you’re ignorant to Marquez’s talent.
It’s time to see what Mayweather is really made of. I for one can’t wait.
i agree with this article for the most part. not the ducking. but about how marquez isn't going to be as much of a walkover as a lot of people are claiming he will be.
