this has been done to death..and you wont get a clear answer.....they had a differant styles..whitaker slipped more punches..and floyd blocks them more often with his shoulders and gloves..both are geniuses on defense and can counter well after slipping or blocking a shot..i say both are great..thats my answerComment

Its 2 totally different styles but I still say that from 130-140 no "righty" will ever hit a "prime" Floyd clean. I dont care who it is. Its the same at WW and probably 154 also but the lack of size changes things. Sweet Pea was more of a mover/slipper while Floyd is more about rolling it and blocking it. Also, I always say this about Offense & Defense. Being a Southpaw is a super huge advantage. If Floyd was a Southpaw you wouldnt be able to land anything and he would hit you at willComment

Pernell slipped punches better imo(i'll tell you why)
floyd blocked punches better
pernell had great upperbody movement, but his body positioning afterwards was a little awkward, meaning he didN'T capitalize offensively like floyd did after he slipped punches--pernell did get hit less slipping punches than floyd did blocking though--but that is only obvious
who is the better counterpuncher---floyd, by miles--pernell counterpunched well, but floyd is the master when it comes to this trait...like i put in so many of my posts---the man can counter off of the block better than anybody can--something floyd patterson did well also...floyd possesses a rare trait that he showed many people on youtube(in the corner), and htat trait is the ability to counter punches from the block--it's a trait that really isn't covered by experts and people on this forum, i always put it in my posts because it's a brilliant trait. Sweet pea didn't possess this trait.
Also, floyd could counter punches that sweet pea couldn't nor look as smooth doing it...i put this in coz pea was a showman, flashy fighter...floyd is ahead of him on this one...floyd could counter left hooks brilliantly ala gatti in round 2 and in his 4th fight with a kid named...well, i forgot the kid's name, but i'll find it...pernell didn't do this better than floyd...floyd also countered great to the body...overall, his defense was better than pernell's, because of his ability to change the tempo of his body movement to get to the offense, and imo that is better defense than just slipping punches, moving away and starting again, something pea did very well...and pea didn't fight well of of the ropes like floyd did---he defended well slipping punches off of the ropes, but floyd turned that defense into offense which is why he took more shots, but won more rounds than pea did...i love comparing these two when it comes to defense...
I'm going with floyd all the way. Pea was the truth though...
OH, AND BEFORE I FORGET, FLOYD DEFENDED A HELL OF A LOT BETTER IN THE POCKET THAN PEA DID...Comment
