Welcome To Contention: Ward Shines in Homecoming

By Jake Donovan - 2004 US Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward was treated like royalty for his homecoming appearance this weekend. After his dominating decision win over Edison Miranda on Saturday night in Oakland, Calif., Ward was treated like an undefeated super middleweight contender.

The bout aired live from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA, on Showtime’s Shobox series.

The tempo of the fight was set in the opening round. Ward controlled the action with his jab, which went virtually undefended for most of the night. The only drama came when a borderline intentional headbutt left Ward with a cut over his left eye midway through the round. The action was all Ward, while Miranda was missing most of his wild haymakers. [details]

    Edison Bumanada

I wonder what excuse Miranda is going to make up this time. Oh, I had the flu. Oh, I couldn't make weight. Oh, .................................. Bum.

ward was just too fast and skilled for miranda. Mirand also was too predictable with trying to throw that right hand bomb. ward could see that and he managed to stay away from it. I'd like to see chad dawson drop to 168 to fight ward. i'd pick ward in that one easily.

I expected more from Miranda. He seemed demoralized when he hit Ward with all he had and Ward just kept on coming forward. Ward has gained my respect and is definitely a top contender.

Miranda was just trying to bomb him out. Was counting on Ward's inexperience thinking that he'll catch a right hand in the 36 minutes they'll have together. No such luck though... Miranda needs to work on some boxing to cut it at the top level. He has been brutally exposed 3 times now.

ward would have no chance of beating chad who is much stronger, has equal handspeed or better, better combination punching and very technically sound
