THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY IS...WOW!!
By Jeff Mayweather
I was in utter shock as to what I witnessed with my own eyes Saturday night as I saw Ricky Hatton get thrashed in very quickly and in devastating fashion.
When Hatton got caught with the first hook that knocked him down, it was a little surprising, not just getting caught but going down so easily, the always rugged and durable Ricky Hatton.
It is not a big deal to see Hatton catching leather with his face because that has always been part of his appeal to his fans. They knew he would get hit with shots and the old Hatton would come back strong, This time Manny's speed made the difference in the fight and his accuracy.
After the first knock down is was easy to see that Hatton was in for a long night or a very short one, It appeared as though he never regained his swagger. Before this fight, I played it so many times in my head and never did I see it ending like it did; maybe the knockout on either side, but not so one-sided and so sudden.
I honestly thought that Ricky Hatton would win this fight I thought his style would present problems for Pacquiao and his physical size would be too much for Manny to overcome. I could only see Pacquiao winning by out smarting and out boxing him from long range. Yet, he beat him in everyway imaginable.
I picked Hatton to win for all the wrong reasons. I guess most people thought I was picking Ricky because he was trained by my older brother; that was not the case. I would have picked Hatton even if his old trainer was still with him and boy did I get egg on my face!
Ricky became a very easy target by refusing to move his head from side to side, even while he was in trouble there still was no head movement. Ricky is a true warrior and went out like a soldier. There should be no shame on his part or with his fans. He gave all he had and was outclassed and and out gunned by the current best pound for pound fighter in the world.
Hatton only has two loses although both were in pretty devastating fashion; they both came at the hands of the two absolute best in the game. I don't know what Ricky will do from this point forward, he still may have some fight in him or this may be the fight in which he says he has had enough and is ready to enjoy the fruits of his labor and enjoy his life with his family and friends. He has done Manchester proud and has made lots of money along the way. There is still only one Ricky Hatton. He is the only fighter to this day that had the support of an entire country, no matter where he fought he was always at home as his dedicated and eager fans sang his praises even in defeat and even in between rounds making their presence felt.
I remember one time I was even caught by the Ricky Hatton bug as I looked down at my feet just tapping away at the chorus of, " There is only one Ricky Hatton" and without even given it a mere thought the words of the song found their way to my lips and I was caught just as much as Hatton's die hard fans.
Ricky, thanks for the ride if it is finally over, and if it's not I still wish you the best. When we met you treated me with nothing but the utmost respect and that is all you can ask of another human being, I guess we will have to wait to find out where this saga will take us in the future... Still in watching what took place in the fight Saturday Night the only thing I can say is... Wow!!!!!!!
