    Heavy Around the (Young) Middle

By Cliff Rold - While it doesn’t engender a ton these days, what discussion there has been about the Middleweight division proper (160 alone and not it’s currently superior 168 lb. cousin) largely has centered on the possibility of a showdown between World champion Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KO) and IBF titlist Arthur Abraham (29-0, 23 KO).

The undercard of Pacquiao-Hatton last weekend may have gone a little Bonnie Raitt, giving us all something to talk about beyond the scope of contemporary pound for pound debates.

Granting some of the three Middleweight-ish fighters featured in the evenings first three bouts will contest at 168 and above, when you lump the youth pools of both classes together, the Middleweight futures market looks worth investing in.

The three fighters on the undercard were former World Amateur champion and Cuban defector Erislandy Lara (5-0, 3 KO), Russia’s former two-time World Amateur champion Matt Korobov (5-0, 5 KO), and former U.S. and two-time National Golden Gloves winner Daniel Jacobs (16-0, 14 KO).

Jacobs, who has been a professional since December 2007 versus Lara and Korobov who turned pro late last year, was matched the toughest and was the only one of the three to go the distance. [details]

I want to see more of Korobov, he really has a bright future!

Jacobs, IMO, underestimated his opponent (who looked a little bit like Marvin Hagler) and had a tough fight. He needs to improve a little bit, and someday he can become a good contender!

Korobov is a machine. To me he looks like a russian Miguel Cotto. He went about with machinelike precision, stalking his opponent while keeping a calm composure like it was just another day at the office. Would definitely like to see what becomes of him.

That's exactly how I would describe his style.

That may be a bad thing in the future though as a flashier, fleet footed outboxer may be able to make him look bad if they can stay away from him.

Add Gennady Golovkin to that list, I'm impressed by him.

yeah no one mentions Golovkin and the comparison to Cotto is good and i'm a huge fan of his but the southpaw factor is a plus & all due respect but Korobov is a much better boxer technically than Cotto, his pure talent is second to none

i was more impressed by korobov than anyone else on that undercard... the thing is i dont reALLY BELIEVE ANYONE SHOULD SAY HE'S A BETTER TECHNICIAN THAN COTTO UNTIL HE FIGHTS SOMEONE GOOD ENOUGH TO expose his mistakes. he probably is and honestly i cant wait to find out... i wanna see him fight again
