Did Floyd have a ski mask at the presser?

Looked like he was on his way to knock over a 7-11 after the presser.

I guess it makes sense since he's so broke now that he wears Hanes wife beaters.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. crashes the party

After temporarily retiring and seeing his informal standing as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter handed to Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather says he's aiming to regain his former status.

By Lance Pugmire and Kevin Baxter
              May 3, 2009
Reporting from Las Vegas -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. returned to boxing today after a temporary retirement, and the 32-year-old who had last fought in December 2007 wasted no time affirming that his charisma and ring skills have not been diminished.

"I'm coming straight from the club, the strip club," Mayweather Jr. said in a news conference at the MGM Grand, where he'll fight Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18 in a welterweight bout expected to be set at a catch-weight limit of 144 pounds. "I'm running seven to eight miles a day. I'm in great shape. Come fight night, I'll be ready."

Since he left the sport last year while walking away from negotiations for a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya, five-division world champion Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 knockouts) has seen his informal standing as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter handed to Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, who fights England's Ricky Hatton later tonight in Las Vegas.

"How am I not the king when nobody's taken my throne?" said Mayweather, who wore black clothing, including a stocking cap and large boots to the news conference.

He said he's prepared to fight all of boxing's top challengers near his weight level, including Pacquiao, Pomona's Shane Mosley and even a possible De La Hoya return fight.

"All roads lead through Mayweather," his advisor, Leonard Ellerbe, said.

And Mayweather said he's willing to fight as often as three times a year.

"If I can stick 'em up three times . . . that's why I came in all black, because it's a bank robbery, baby," he cracked.

Mayweather, known to flaunt his cash, said in a prepared statement that his comeback was motivated because he missed "the competition and my fans." He and Ellerbe denied that it was entirely about money, following reports of tax problems and Mayweather's admission that he has been slow to pay the IRS.

Mayweather said he has paid for "a $20-million house, a $5-million house, my kids' college. . . . If it makes business sense, it makes all the sense in the world."

Ellerbe said Mayweather's interest in returning was piqued by private workouts in his Las Vegas gym, and by seeing Marquez batter Juan Diaz in late February.

"Floyd needed a break from the sport and he had to realize he missed the sport," Ellerbe said. "Now, we're going to line up all these so-called best guys and, one by one, pick 'em off. It starts with Marquez."

World lightweight champion Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) will have to move up at least nine pounds for the bout, and conceded it will be "tough. . . . I'm strong, I feel good, I'm training to go up in weight."

Marquez said Mayweather's inactivity in the ring is to the unbeaten fighter's detriment.

"You lose a bit," Marquez said.

De La Hoya, Marquez's promoter, said he has told Marquez that "Mayweather doesn't hit hard. I know. I put my head right in front of him. . . . I've told [Marquez] to throw the jab, [Mayweather] doesn't like the jab."

And Mayweather dismissed the suggestion that the bout might be a mismatch, noting a smaller Pacquiao beat De La Hoya and former lightweight Mosley beat welterweight De La Hoya twice.

Otherwise, he celebrated a return to the spotlight that he attracted with high-profile fights against De La Hoya and Hatton, and a crossover appeal by appearing on " Dancing With the Stars," World Wrestling Entertainment's " Wrestlemania" and two reality show turns on HBO's "24/7."

"One day, someone will shut my mouth," Mayweather said. "Right now, I'm the top dog."
