I see. I've always wondered, I've been in Rockerfeller Plaza but never understood what the 'plaza' part stood for, we don't have the term in the UK.

I can answer that considering I live in Southern California. The difference between a plaza and a mall is basically this: A plaza is a collection of businesses that are not centrally located as a mall. For example, a grocery store, a hair salon, and a Starbucks at a location off a side street would be considered a plaza. A mall on the other hand is a central location specifically for shopping with department stores like Sears, high end clothing stores/retail, and multiple shopping levels that are at least 2 stories high if not 3-4-5-6 etc depending on the size of the mall. Hopefully that explains it to a guy from the UK.
