Pacquiao Aims for Four (and Six): Real History - Thoughts

By Cliff Rold - The old timers are right of course.

They look around at the fighters in recent times collecting belts in an assortment of weight classes and say, “It’s not the same as it used to be.”

While the idea that titles were once always undisputed is flawed, the term “World Champion” still meant one guy more often than not prior to the 1960s and into today. In our time, stats and belt accumulation are easier to amass and manipulate. There are more belts lying around in every weight class, meaning that star fighters can be selective in their choices as they venture up the scale.

Great work Cliff Rold. I appreciate your relating boxing history making it easier for fight fans to appreciate a present fighter's accomplishments when compared with the greats of boxing past. Keep it up.

Yes, Pacquiao is aiming for history Saturday night... the only boxer to win 4 lineal titles in 4 of the original 8 boxing divisions.

yup..i really learned a lot from this series of articles..this article right here is a great finale to the series..a friend of mine just got excited with the fight when i told him that Pac is going for a 4th ring belt and if he wins his fight with hatton, he'll be the 1st in history to do so..he is just a casual fans and casual fans and relate to this type of stories..it's not complicated as saying that pac is chasing for his 6th world title..

Thanks fellas...though a correction...it's not a 4th Ring belt...it's a 4th lineal title. Had Ring never ceased handing out belts for lineage in the 90s, all other results the same, it would have been 4 traced back to Canto at Flyweight.

the first ever to win 4 lineals...wow.
I did not pay much attention to these series of articles, I only read this particular one.

I was excited to see this fight, but not as excited as now.
