Spinks Tops Latimore in Battle of St. Louis

By Cliff Rold - An increase in action turned out not to work against him in front of hometown fans that went from boos to cheers on Friday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, as 30-year old former World Welterweight champion Cory Spinks (37-5, 11 KO) picked up the vacant IBF Jr. Middleweight belt for the second time just one fight after losing it to a Verno Phillips who had since vacated.

It wasn’t easy.

Hometown grudge matches rarely are.

23-year old Deandre Latimore (19-2, 16 KO), also of St. Louis, appeared only a punch or two away from a first round knockout before the weight of experience tipped the scales against him in a crowd pleasing encounter that saw Spinks enter the villain cheers and exit returned as hometown hero.

Both men weighed in below the 154 lb. limit, Spinks at 152 ¾ and Latimore at 153 ½. [details]

I'm not sure if you watched the fight, but Spinks fought a lot differently than he normally does. He leaned in on Latimore the whole time and ****** it out. Honestly it was kind of weird. Pretty exciting fight actually.

On another note, how the hell did one judge get 115-112 for Latimore? That suggests he scored it 8-4 Latimore with Latimore losing a point (there was no point deduction and it was Spinks who went down). I suspect his score was actually 115-112 Spinks, like Adalaide Byrd scored it, which I agree with. This makes sense because of the 10-8 1st round when Spinks went down.
