How famous was Lennox Lewis in the U.S?

I get the impression that he was virtually unknown there and normal sports fans did not know who he was in the us despite him being a great fighter, is this true? I think he would have been alot more famous and gotten alot more respect had he been american.

He was well known, but he didn't get the respect he deserved until late in his career. It's kind of hard for a casual fan to really be interested in a guy who stays at home with his mom, never makes public appearances, plays chess, doesn't hype a fight, and speaks with a jamaican/british/canadian accent. Not to mention he was living in the shadow of Tyson.

Dude was the most durable and dominant man at HW for a long time. He may not have been altogether accepted and popular, but he was known and respected.
