Wow, tough crowd. I can't see how anyone says Showtime sucks. IMO, they go out of their way to secure the fights that fans want - or CLAIM to want - to see. HBO will always have the bigger events (from the post-Tyson era onward), but for years Showtime has always made far more out of the budget they're allotted than has been the case with their big brother.

That said, I don't disagree with the opinions on Al Bernstein. I've always argued that he's subtle with his bias since joining Showtime (he was far worse with ESPN), but the most specific example is when a Gary Shaw fighter is on (which is quite often). I've always enjoyed his enthusiasm and passion for the sport, but don't always see the same fight he claims to be the case.

Haven't yet warmed up to Gus Johnson. Never cared for him in any other genre, and he basically sounds the same when calling a fight as when he's doing college basketball or an NFL game.

I have no comment on Karyn Bryant. I guess if HBO will stubbornly keep Lennox Lewis on board, then Showtime has the right to do the same with Bryant. But plugging their shows by interviewing actors who obviously know nothing about boxing - that really needs to go. I don't see them asking Vic Darchinyan what he thinks of Dexter or The Tudors so not quite sure why I need to hear David Zayas' uninformed (and drunken) opinion of the fights we're watching (and he's obviously not watching)

Atleast it's better than listening to Max Kellerman and *****-ass Jim Lampley.

no question. though I have to disagree with whoever made the earlier comment about Harold Lederman. I don't always agree with his scorecards, but you won't find a more passionate personality in the sport than Harold. I'll gladly take him over just about any other non-lead announcer in the sport today.

Niether network si perfect...I tend to favor HBO over Showtime I find myself bored with the commentary of Showtime and the interviews of the actors and soemtimes even of the fighters themselves are terrible. While Jim Lampley's voice may be annoying he is atleast entertaining Max Kellermam is also annoying with his voice but he calls out fighters and sometimes says things I am thinking myself. While Lennox Lewis may sometimes studder he does point out technical observations and has some good insight into a fighters mind since he was a HW Champ himself. While I commend Showtime for airing this fight I still favor and wish the fight had been on HBO....Lefty

How awesome was it in the PWill fight when Lampley started talking about the ring card girls' belly button and the "bauble". I miss those types of things on the Showtime shows, BUT they really need to be commended for their programming. HBO is coming around, but the ShoBox series is fantastic (although the matchmaking has been a little suspect lately), and their championship boxing series almost always delivers an even matched fight. Nick Charles' teeth really freak me out, he has Skeletor mouth and him and Farhood are WAAY to geeky. I like Bernstein's insight and experience and I think Gus johnson will come around. unlike you Jake, I love when he calls sports, he definitely gets me hype.

HBO-Bring Roy Jones (or get Bhop) back please and get rid of Lennox!!!!!!!

              Lefty,

I gotta disagree about Lennox's insights. Technically, his comments are terrible, but his comments about a fighters mindframe, I do find interesting.

Is this is a shot at Taylor for not really knowing his biological father?

I like that Showtime picks up the slack for HBO, I'm looking forward to Froch/Taylor much more then Juanma/Penalosa. Plus I've been wanting to see Latimore fight since he shocked Powell.

alright, let me revise my earlier comment on Gus... I'm indifferent to him as an announcer. I'm glad that plenty of people out there appreciate his enthusiasm. IMO, he gets way too caught up in the moment, but I guess it's better to be that way than to constantly **** on the sport (any sport, for that matter). I liked him back in the day when he called Knicks games on radio
