Anyone else think that Bruce Curry beat Wilfredo Benitez ? i thought Curry had done enough to take the fight by 1 maybe 2 rounds. Bentiez was down twice in one round and on almost knocked out. Another ref may have stopped the fight then. I still thought Curry did enough to win WITH the knockdowns.
Anyone else think that Bruce Curry beat Wilfredo Benitez ?

yes, I did. but Benitez beat him in the rematch.
how that fight was not stopped at some point is amazing. there were some BAD looking knockdowns.
Benitez was too green at 140. He was a MUCH improved fighter at 147 and 154.
still very good at 140 though.
underrated fighter, Bruce. its weird that he only won a title years later, when he was a little bit past his best. -

I haven't seen the rematch i will have to watch that.
I know Benitez fell through the ropes at one point trying to get up.
Apparently Benitez was supposed to fight Duran, but Duran got the flu and Curry stepped in. He fought well for short notice thats for sure. I dont know too much about him. I seen him fight Hearns but thats it. I take your word for it that he was an "underrated fighter" he looked pretty good to me.Comment

Hey blackirish137 i watched the Sanchez fight with Cowdell this morning to, and yeah he did give Sanchez some trouble with his awkward style. I think like you that Sanchez just fought to the level of his competition. I think he showed what a great fighter he was by picking that right hand out the bag and dropping Cowdell in the 15, when he probably needed it to make absolutely sure he had won.
I think all great fighters have trouble with some guys that you dont expect them to. I remember watching Whitaker have his troubles with Gary Jacobs and Poli Diaz early on. Jones having trouble with Griffin. Mayweather and Castillo,Judah etc. I dont hold it against them.Comment

its strange how great fighters can run into problems against not-so-great(but not bad either) fighters. you cant really say so and so was overrated either, because it happens to ALL the greats.Hey blackirish137 i watched the Sanchez fight with Cowdell this morning to, and yeah he did give Sanchez some trouble with his awkward style. Even Mayweather had some trouble against guys like Sosa and Corley, which you never would have expected.
there are always some styles that will give even the greats a rough time.
thats why people need to look at the style matchup before shrugging off a fighter, without automatically thinking that a certain opponent is 'out of his league'.
styles make a HUGE difference in boxing. which is one reason I like it so muchLast edited by Steak; 04-21-2009, 10:47 AM.Comment

Indeed, Curry really should of got the decsion against Benitez the 1st time no dout. He was robbed out of was would of been his biggest ever victory to date, losing on a bogus SD. They rematched in 79 and Benitez would win again on a MD. In which some still fought Curry desreved.
It is belived that after these defeats, Curry cound't accept what had happened and how he'd been robbed of his victory. But he still would on to win a USBA Title, and would fail in a challage for the WBC LW Title getting beat on UD against Leroy Haley. Thomas Hearns also KO'd him in 79. And he was the brother of former Undisputed Welteweight Chamion Bruce Curry.Comment

Yeah thats exactly what im talkin about. We saw Floyd have a much harder time of it with Sosa and Corley than he should have. Yet Cotto beat Sosa down decisively. Not to say Cotto is a better fighter, but you cant call someone like Duran overrated cause he lost to someone like Laing. **** like that even happens to great fighters from time to time. They either lose or look terrible against a guy they should in theory be able to beat easily.its strange how great fighters can run into problems against not-so-great(but not bad either) fighters. you cant really say so and so was overrated either, because it happens to ALL the greats.

That is what annoys me most all about people who say **** like, if Lewis struggled with Mercer he would of lost Holmes,Ali,Foreman etc etc. Im not saying he would not, but to use that as an analogy is dumb imo, and misguided. They dont just apply that logic to Lewis either they have a tendency to say that kinda thing about any fighter. Dont get me wrong sometimes you can make valid comparison that way, but some people do it waay to frequently.
I love you posts blackirish137 your Boxing knowledge is excellent and your opinions well balanced.Comment

I thought it was a close fight in terms of rounds scoring, which was the scoring system in place for that fight, I still thought Curry pulled it out though, in points, Curry definitely won and I also can't believe that fight wasn't stopped, Benitez was out.Comment

Yeah i would say Benitez may have took the last 2 rounds of the fight possibly 3, after he regrouped and got his legs back under him. Mind you his cause was helped by Curry punching himself out when he had Benitez hurt. Id have given Benitez 4 rounds at the MOST. Which is a close fight considering it was a 10 rounder. However you knew Curry had won the fight clearly even though it was close in the end.Comment
