Desde finales de 2008, en el mundo del boxeo, se ha especulado acerca de una posible pelea entre Erik Morales y Juan Manuel Márquez. El mismo Morales llegó a asegurar que se encontraría en condiciones de enfrentarlo para marzo del presente año. "Estamos en negociaciones, tuve un acercamiento, y en un par de semanas estaremos concretando la negociación. Es una pelea muy esperada, la gente vio Morales-Barrera, Barrera-Pacquiao, Morales-Pacquiao y Pacquiao-Márquez. Sólo falta Morales-Márquez", decía Erik Morales desde sus oficinas en el Instituto Municipal del Deporte de Tijuana. Pero dicha pelea no llegó a concretarse, y a cambio pudimos ver a Juan Manuel Márquez enfrentando al excampeón mundial ligero Juan Díaz, en el mas espectacular match celebrado entre pesos ligeros de los últimos tiempos, algo que no se había visto desde Corrales vs Castillo, que se celebrara en mayo de 2005.

Juan Manuel Márquez, quién posee el estatus de Súper Campeón por parte de los Organismos mundiales WBA y WBO, en la actualidad no debería celebrar un combate innecesario, está a un paso de la inmortalidad en el pugilismo nacional, y una pelea contra Morales lo único que representa es dinero, no le añadiría mas prestigio a su ya de por si excelente carrera profesional. Además no podríamos culpar a Erik Morales por querer regresar -él no tiene la culpa de que la gente de Márquez se preste para realizar esta pelea-, y es comprensible que tenga deseos de volverse a subir a un ring cuando le ponen a su disposición una pelea donde buscaría de nueva cuenta una 4ta corona mundial y contra el mejor peleador azteca en la actualidad, y que para muchos es el verdadero “Rey libra por libra”. “Es bien difícil que un boxeador realmente triunfe. A veces no es tan importante el ganar o el perder al final de tu carrera. El decir, ‘hay se fue como campeón’, pues si se fue como campeón el pobre, porque no ganó mas. Creo que ya hemos tenido en los últimos dos años suficientes combates bochornosos como para agregar otro mas a la lista. Márquez vs Morales no sería muy diferente al Jones vs Trinidad, Mayorga vs Vargas, Pacquiao vs De la Hoya, Khan vs Barrera, o el más reciente Williams vs Wright. En donde se lucra con el nombre, mas no con el nivel real del atleta que se encuentra muy fuera de sus mejores tiempos. A veces los peleadores no se dan cuenta de que ya no se encuentran en condiciones de competir en un nivel donde estaban acostumbrados a hacerlo, y sus seguidores se aferran a creer que todavía les queda algo. Pero la realidad es que solo sirven para engordar los records de los peleadores Elite o contendientes que vienen subiendo, eso por desgracia, siempre ha pasado en el mundo del boxeo.
