Hatton is saying this to build his own confidence. You can clearly hear by the way he talks about Manny and how he states that everyone is saying Manny should be facing Godzilla and not him, it's sort of going to his head. Saying he's a new man is his way of thinking he has a great chance against Manny along with the other putdowns he has of Manny's recent accomplishments. Let's face it. Outboxing a featherfisted mediocre boxer in Paulie will have carry no weight on how well Hatton can attempt to box Manny. Paulie and Manny are literally night and day and the two cannot be compared in any way.
Why is Hatton placing so much emphasis on being a 'new fighter'?

I think with Floyd Mayweather as trainer there really is a new philosophy at camp Hatton; and they believe that 'hit and don't get hit' is key; slick boxing is the staple of the Mayweather clan- a mentality that just saw Hatton getting put down badly.
Maybe Hatton should be rough, launch a rainstorm of body shots and look to tear Manny up inside. At best, he'll do that with more of a pace, attempting more accurate shots rather than brute strength swamping Pacquiao.
Really, though, it seems to me that everyone is applauding what Freddie did in honing Manny Pacquiao's style, that somehow people feel it can really translate into a pupil like Hatton learning a new arsenal from a trainer like Floyd, even this late in the game.
While I don't think Ricky will ever be a new fighter, what he attempts to do against Manny will probably be infused with the need to box and do technically sound things. Whether that's his saving grace or his downfall, I can't say.
but i think there are some different circumstances - in reference to the Roach/Pacman comparison; such as,
Mayweather Snr. possibly not quite being as good a trainer as he's made out to be
Hatton not being as skilled as Pacquiao, and his style being further away from a "boxer" than Pacquiao's was
and what i gathered from various Hatton comments and the Malignaggi fight to a degree, is that becoming a "boxer" essentially just means to be more composed/patient in there, and avoid rushing in at every possible opportunity, and maybe pop a little jab with those t-rex arms of his every once in a while..... And i believe this can only be detrimental to his game really, it goes against the fundamental philisophy that took him to the topComment

but as a gauge on how he will approach the fight it just sounds worrying to meComment

i personally think floyd, sr. has not taught hatton anything new.......but hes attitude and style has rejuvinated hatton...and brought his swagger back so to speak...he has mad some improvements in defense and head movement...but its not really a "new" ricky hatton.....i think roach believes hatton is shot as a fighter if you ask meComment

my point still stands though... i think Hatton going out of his way to attempt these things that are unnatural to him and he probably can't even do at an elite level will do him more harm than goodComment
