Report Card: Paul Williams Reaches Another Level

By Cliff Rold - There are two basic ways to approach the ‘pound-for-pound’ debates. The most prevalent is to examine resumes and argue about who beat who on the way to weighed analyses of career accomplishments.

I think he is unbeatable right now between 147 and 160.These fighters know it and the promoters as well. Its a shame, but his career might end up like Terry Norris'.The top well known fighters of his time refused to fight him.He had to fight second rated fighters until he was slightly past his prime and lost focus. That appears to be the same path Williams is on.I can understand the welterweights avoiding him,but come on Vernon Forest.Come on Kelly Pavlik,Jermaine Taylor,Arthur Abraham, step up to the plate.I can invision Berto stepping up to fight him just to build his name up.It would be a tough fight for him, but it would be exciting. They both throw a lot of punches, but Williams' height and reach would be the difference in the fight.Boxing is becoming such a big turn-off.These big named guys are ducking the real challenges in order to get big paydays. It makes sense from a business standpoint, but it kills the sport.

      PW Fights

Margerito will probably want to fight PW if he ever gets licensed again in the US I see PW winning it very lopsided due to margo layoff. Unless Roach becomes his trainer that could help margo out huge

Paul Williams should now DEFINITELY be on the P4P rankings...and very high at that. He is DEFINITELY the most feared from 147 to 160 and only Floyd Jr and King Arthur have a chance at defeating him!!!

I'm not too sure I agree with this. I don't think Paul can stake claim as a monster from 147-160. Really, once he settles in one division and is able to face several top guys at the weight, then I'll begin measuring him anew.

Phase one was when Paul broke onto the scene. I liked him. Then he beat Margarito in a close fight and we saw what he brought to the table. I'm not sold, though, that he's suited for a lengthy campaign at 160. I think he's just too small.

I think, really, Williams is trapped in the no-man's land of junior middleweight. The really juicy, big names are either just a bit South or North of where he belongs. Does he battle at welterweight and risk being a bit drained, facing faster, sharp men who he has a power edge on? Or does he go up to middleweight where his power becomes less of a factor but where his stamina is better and he can outhustle the bigger men?

Paul Williams is on course to be the Middleweight version of Juan Diaz, a high-pressure fighter with amazing stamina who has more problems when facing a skilled boxer with power, where he can't afford to throw all the little shots and odd angled punches he'd like. I'd really say I don't think Paul has much pop at 160.

Nobody at 147 wants any part of PWill not just FM... I want to see what Cotto says because Will says he wants the WBO belt back..

Williams isn’t just looking for the biggest payday. He’s eager to go back to welterweight to reclaim his WBO title belt, which he feels was wrongly taken from him after he reclaimed it last summer with a first-round knockout of Carlos Quintana, the only fighter to beat him.
