Pacquiao knocks down sparmate with body shot

Pacquiao knocks down sparmate with body shot

`Alex Ariza raved so much about the current condition of Manny Pacquiao that the conditioning coach could not come up with anything bad about the progress of the Filipino fighter’s training for the May 2 showdown with Ricky Hatton.

“He’s a juggernaut,” Ariza told the Bulletin yesterday from Los Angeles. Ariza has been presiding over Pacquiao’s strength training at the Wild Card Boxing Club the past several weeks that there’s no doubt in his mind that Pacquiao would prove one thing come fight night.

“Manny’s lethal at this weight division (140 lbs) and he’s going to show that he’s the stronger guy,” said Ariza when told about the common knowledge among aficionados that the British bomber packs more power.

“I will not go as far as saying what Freddie (Roach) said about a third-round knockout but Manny’s been unstoppable right now.” On Saturday afternoon (yesterday morning in Manila), Pacquiao went 10 rounds with three sparring partners, according to Ariza, who supervises Pacquiao’s morning roadwork, his nutrition and plyometrics session, a high-grade form of calisthenics.

“Manny had four rounds with Urbano Antillon, then three with (Raymond) Serrrano and three with David Rodela, who went down from a body shot.” Ariza said Pacquiao weighed 149 lbs last week and “had a 6.75 percent body fat.”

“(Making) the weight (limit of 140 lbs) will not be a problem and we’ll make sure that he even gets to eat on the day of the weighin,” said Ariza, brushing off suggestions that game meat should be included on Pacquiao’s diet.

“We’re sticking to the things that we’re used to.” Meanwhile, Hatton is also deep in training in Las Vegas under Floyd Mayweather Sr. and is presently working with five sparmates.

According to Golden Boy Promotions, Hatton’s promoter, aside from Cuban super-welterweight Erislandy Lara, the 2005 world amateur welter champion, Hatton also works out with Cleotis Pendarvis (9-1-2 record with three KOs), Marvin Quintero (15-1, 12 KOs), Daniel Mitchell (5-0-1 2 KOs) and Cornelius Lock (18-3-1 11 KOs), all left-handed like Pacquiao.`

all we seem to hear from the pacquaio camp, is how he is beating up on his sparring partners. it is almost like they are scared, and trying to sound tough...

none of his sparmates are ricky hatton though!

Again, what is Pac gonna learn from KO'ing super featherweights??

Hatton is sparring with guys at light middleweight and being challenged so he can learn about what needs improving in his game and so he can be prepared against Manny.

Everything seems to be adding up to a Hatton victory for me..

why spar jr. middleweights when your going to be in there with a super featherweight? Why spar bigger guys when your fighting a smaller faster guy like Pacquiao?

Argument can go both ways. It's just sparring. The are getting there timing and skills sharp while going against fighters with a somewhat similar look or style of their opponent.

Hatton's sparring quick guys, who will have more power than Pac, and they are southpaws. Great learning experience and conditioning.

Exactly. Pacquiao is a great fighter, obviously, or else he wouldn't be P4P the best, but why is Roach having him fight weaker guys? I mean, technically Pacquiao hasn't fought a true Jr. WW (weight drained DLH doesn't count), wouldn't it be a smarter decision to get Pacquiao more accustomed to a bigger sparring partner?

Just imagine, all the great lightweights he has fought that are SMALLER than Hatton, rocked him with head shots (Morales, Marquez). Then again Manny's preparation has always been on point.

As far as that body shot, I'll bet anyone if Pacquiao and Hatton threw their hardest body shots at each other simultaneously, that Manny would be down and out in a second.

Hatton should of sparrred with Ivan Calderon, because Calderon is a southPaw , he is fast as hell and so can Hatton can learn with the inside and outside quick movement of Pacquiao.

Sa`prring bigge slowe guys, is ****** when you fighting a smaller way faster guy. It doesnt make sense!!!!!!!!!

I disagree. Mayweather is smarter, stronger, and fast himself, but I think Pacquiao is faster than Mayweather. Pacquiao deffinately gets his combos off a lot faster and throws more combos where as Mayweather usually just throws one counter shot at a time.
