Youth Prevails: Williams Dominates a Returning Wright

By Cliff Rold - With his children cheering him on at ringside, 27-year old Middleweight (at least for this night) Paul Williams (37-1, 27 KO) of Augusta, Georgia notched what might be his finest victory to date, overwhelming 37-year old former undisputed World Jr. Middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO) over twelve non-title rounds on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Making his first start in the almost two years since a failed bid to upend then-Light Heavyweight titlist Bernard Hopkins in 2007, it was the worst loss Wright had taken since a five-knockdown decision defeat in his first title attempt against Julio Cesar Vasquez in 1994.

Both men came in below the Middleweight limit, Wright at 159 and Williams at 157. It was the latest in a recent trend of much younger men, finally, overtaking the elder statesman of the game.

Both men were sharp in the early seconds of the bout, Williams throwing his right jab in combination but often finding the gloves of Wright while Wright was able to connect clean with his jab and right hook. The difficult Wright defense left room only for the occasional hook to the body as Williams’ uppercuts and hooks bounced repeatedly off of leather. [details]

Oh ! it wasn't for a title so they must both suck or imagine if they were both fighting for a vacant belt, they both would suck...lol

But really, Williams looked very good and on this night even unbeatable while Wright looked good too in his loss.

paul williams looked real good in this fight. Much better than i anticipated him fighting. on the other hand, winky did not look as good as i anticipated. he got him a$s whipped the whole night.
even though paul won and looked good doing so, he needs to work on his defense and power. with the amount of times paul had winky with a fist in his face, he should have knocked him out. it looked like he was going to, in as early as the 2nd round, but just didnt have the power to put wright away.

                As predicted....

I called a UD for Paul Williams before this fight as I knew his overwhelming barrage of punches would collapse Winky's shell defensive style. Good effort from Winky though albeit very one sided, but I think is the best thing to happen to Winky at this point in his career. It shows he is beatable and now he will most certainly get fights. All in all that's not a bad thing, and the Punisher now should fight Kelly Pavlik. That would be a GREAT fight!

i want to see hopkins v. the punisher. wright is a defensive fighter but does so with lots of blocking and parrying. B-Hop is a defensive mind that slips and makes his opponents miss a lot or second guess their plan of action. i wonder if hopkins could slow williams down enough to win or if it would end up like the calzaghe fight. B-Hop can also mix it up better on the inside than wright can. it'll never happen but i'd like to see it.

Hopkins is also a much larger, and more powerful opponent than anyone Williams has faced before. I'm sure B-Hop will think about it if he doesn't retire.

If Hopkins won that bout, there'd be no question. He's the best p4p fighter of this generation. Not Roy Jones, not Mayweather, not Pacquaio.
