Dan Goossen Makes the Hard Sell

By T.K. Stewart - Make no mistake about it, promoter Dan Goossen knows a thing or two about this game they call boxing and he knows how to sell a prizefight.

Goossen, the co-promoter of tomorrow night’s Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright headliner at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, goes back nearly three decades with his first boxing promotional company. It was called “Ten Goose Boxing” and it was named after he and his nine siblings. Goossen has been around long enough to have hyped Mr. “T” before he ushered Gabe and Rafael Ruelas as well as Michael Nunn to world championships.

So Goossen obviously knows when he has a good fight on his hands and he’s a little exasperated that tickets for Saturday night’s big show are turning out to be selling about as fast as a parking lot full of General Motors’ finest. There are reports emanating from Sin City, which are difficult to validate, since any information that comes from the Mandalay Bay Events Center press offices are more controlled than the teleprompter at a Barack ***** news conference, that indicate 90% of the seats remain unsold. Doesn't surprise me one bit, Paul Williams is unknown and Winky has never been in an exiting fight. I guess Winky's borefest with Bernard has turned off what little supporters he had left.

The fight location, economy and the fact that Williams and Wright dont have a huge following are all contributing factors to this not selling well.

This fight really should have been in Florida or Atlanta

I'll be there because I'll be in Vegas anyway. I'll be able to get a good seat...

I wish the undercard was better...there really just the Arreola fight that's interesting. Promoters can't seem to understand that it's really important to have a couple of fairly interesting fights besides the main event(s). Golden Boy could do better, they have a LOT of fighters.

Once this fight was announced for Vegas you knew it was not gonna draw. This fight belonged in a real fight town. Goosen has done a terrible job in building P-WLL as well as Andre Ward. Shame on him for taking the easy route with the casino money!

This fight should have been in Cali or Florida, it was never going to do well in Vegas.

Goosen is promoting Paul in the wrong side of the states. This fight should of been on the east coast, I bet it would of sold a lot more.
