I personally find this matchup to be the most interesting of the trilogy.
I think the wrong fighter won, and I think this is the fight where the scoring makes the least sense of the three, and I think this is the fight where one fighter dominated the bout more than the other two. Say what you want about one and three, I think Morales has a better argument for winning either of those than Barrera does for 2. Before anyone claims bias, I do think Barrera won 1 and 3, and fairly clearly both times... I just thought the rematch was a crush for Morales.
I also find it interesting that some people regard this fight as a snoozer. The later rounds were as vicious as any part of the trilogy, and I personally love the boxing in the early rounds... it was not super high contact, but it was still very violent for that kind of fight, and definitely held my interest. I definitely think it would have been FOTY had it not been for Ward and Gatti trying to commit ****cide and suicide at the same time in their first fight.
Larry Merchant is a downright idiot for criticizing the action in this fight. A blasphemous naysayer who receives way too much credit for his lack of knowledge about the sport. I really dislike Larry Merchant for reasons like this.
What do most people think about the fight of the trilogy that generally seems to have slipped through the cracks?
