When does or should a boxer decide to say, “adios?” As for athletes in other sports, it depends upon the fighter. Take the case of Billy Soose. Soose never fought after his 26th birthday. World War II first shortened his career as he fought for his country. After the war, Soose was offered $100,000 to fight Billy Conn but he turned it down. Soose’s wife did not want him to fight anymore and he jointly owned property in the Pocono. He was financially secure, so he did not need to fight. He simply went on with the rest of his life. When Should a Boxer Retire?

I think they should retire when they know they are no longer as good as they once were.
The age at which this can happen can vary quite a lot. For example, I think Hopkins is arguably as good as he ever was, likewise Kostya, whereas I think DLH has lost something.Comment

A boxer should retire after suffering bad loses or when boxer
starts to take unnessesary punishment in his victories. Take
Muhammad Ali for example, After the "thrilla in manilla" he took
so much punishment in his fights after that. Muhammad Ali's
ability to take a punch was not so much a virtue but a liability
by the end of his career.

When a fighter says "I could see the punches coming I just couldn't get out of the way" I could see the openings I just couldn't get the punches off in enough time, but I still want to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world" The words from the biggest overachiever any of us will ever knowComment
