Is Juan Carlos Gomez the best professional Cuban heavyweight ever?

He's not great, but he's not too bad...

I checked the historic boxrec rankings, and I didn't recognize anyone.

So what do you all think?

I think Solis if he loses some weight will prove to be the better fighter by the end of his career.

    If only Savon turned professional

          What's the background on him?
Valdes was a big heavyweight for his time at 6'3, 210 lbs, 80" reach. He was quite inconsistent early on in his career but in 1953 he became the number 1 ranked heavyweight contender in the world when he beat former champion Ezzard Charles by a decision. That same year he also KO'd Omelio Agramonte (probably top 5-10 Cuban all-time HW himself).

He remained the number 1 challenger without getting a shot at the champion Rocky Marciano, beating top heavyweights such as James J Parker, Heinz Neuhaus, Archie McBride, Hurricane Jackson, until 1955 when Archie Moore outboxed him yet again.

It seemed like Valdes was on the decline, losing some (decisions to Satterfield, Baker, Machen, Folley), winning some (TKO3 Don ****ell) but he bounced back with KO wins over top European heavyweights **** Richardson and the undefeated Joe Erskine. He also defeated John Holman, a solid contender who once KO'd a past prime Ezzard Charles, as well as the durable Wayne Bethea and popular Mike DeJohn.

Sonny Liston ended his career by KO'ing him in three rounds.

Solis is nothing special, he's a fat slob and lacks power, he couldn't even stop the glass chinned tomato can Julius Long. Tye ****in Fields KO'd Julius Long in 2 rounds.

Ruslan Chagaev clearly beat Savon twice....and Sultan Ibragimov beat up Savon and got robbed in the 2000 olympics gold medal final.

Juan Carlos Gomez is one of the greatest cruiserweights of all time. Dominated the division and defended the world championship 10 times. He has underachieved at heavyweight, was partying too much and doing *******, but now he has turned his career around, he dominated the hard hitting former Ring top 10 HW Vladimir Virchis, schooled McCall twice, domnated Sinal Sam and showed a lot of heart and courage in a KO loss to Vitali Klitschko.

So YES. Juan Carlos Gomez is the best Cuban heavyweight of all time.

Might your assessment have anything to do with the fact, that you'd like Klitschko to have beaten the best Cuban Heavyweight, ever?
