Cuando José “Carita” López venció al tailandés Pramuansak Posuwan el pasado sábado para conquistar el cetro supermosca de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), dio pie a un fenómeno que no ocurría hace 15 años.

Por segunda vez desde 1994, Puerto Rico cuenta con ocho campeones mundiales simultáneamente. Aparte de “Carita”, Juan Manuel López, Iván Calderón, Miguel Cotto, Daniel Santos, Román “Rocky” Martínez, Víctor “Vitiño” Fonseca y Orlando Cruz componen el grupo y Primera Hora los juntó en una fotografía para la historia.


“Por demasiado tiempo no pasábamos de dos o tres (campeones). Varios nos conocemos desde que fuimos aficionados y es un honor poder compartir con todos ellos”, dijo Santos, monarca de las 154 libras de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo.

Tanto “Juanma” como Martínez coincidieron en que los ojos del mundo descansan sobre la Isla por la camada de monarcas en la actualidad.


“Sin lugar a dudas, estamos pasando por el mejor momento y eso no se veía desde hace tiempo”, indicó “Juanma”, quien posee la correa de las 122 libras de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB). “Aparte de que somos campeones, somos amigos. Tengo una gran amistad con todos ellos. Tratamos de apoyarnos los unos a los otros”.

“Puerto Rico ahora mismo está en el peak con tantos peleadores que han podido ganar un título”, añadió “Rocky” Martínez, quien el pasado 14 de marzo le arrebató el cetro de las 130 libras de la OMB al británico Nicky Cook al noquearlo en el cuarto asalto. “Eso lo que hace es que uno tenga más deseos de seguir trabajando para mantenerse”, agregó Martínez.

Cotto, que ganó el cetro welter de la OMB en febrero pasado ante Michael Jennings, destacó por su parte que otros podrían unirse pronto a la familia de campeones.

“Me siento contento con el trabajo realizado por cada uno, no solamente por haber ganado un título, sino además por aquellos que poco a poco se van abriendo camino”, indicó Cotto.

Para Calderón, titular de las 108 libras de las OMB, el creciente número de monarcas es un reflejo no sólo del talento, sino también del compromiso que acompaña a cada uno.

“Todos han luchado para hacerse campeones. Algunos pensaron que Rocky (Martínez) quizás no tenía la mejor técnica, pero trabajó bien fuerte para lograr lo que tiene”, resaltó Calderón.

Cruz, por otro lado, apuntó que resiente el poco reconocimiento que recibe por poseer una faja de la Asociación Internacional de Boxeo (AIB).

“Quizás el título de la AIB no es el de la OMB, pero sigue siendo un campeonato mundial. La gente a veces lo menosprecia, pero se olvidan que boxeadores como Shane Mosley, Oscar de la Hoya y Roy Jones, Jr., ganaron una faja de la AIB”, destacó Cruz.
