So what happened in the Danny Williams fight? and then why was he not in shape and punching with power for the McBride fight? why didnt Mike just fight a few months after the Etienne fight? Maybe he should have padded the record and created a bit of hype. I mean you always see a fighter pad up his record with safety first fights, after a KO loss.

That fight was a fix. Who takes their gum shield out if they're KOed?

From what I heard, Tyson barely trained for the Etienne fight which I think Roach wasn't too pleased with. For the Williams fight, it was a much better camp. Tyson still didn't look like the "Vintage Tyson" like people claim but it was better than what showed up in say the Botha fight.
Once Tyson got injured in the Williams fight he had no chance to win. I still think he would have burnt out by the mid rounds anyway because he was too heavy, too old, and weed probably destroyed his cardio.
After the Williams fight, they parted ways because Roach thought Mike should retire but Tyson had no choice but to go on because of Uncle Sam kept ****ing at his door.

That's what I remember hearing anyway.

Mike Looked okay in that fight, but to me, he just looks slow. His punches were fast, but not like he used to be, when he was throwing 5 punch combinations when he was in his early 20's.

It wasn't a fix. He was hit with a solid shot and he went out.
The gum-shiled thing was interesting but I saw it happen to another fighter that was knocked-down and on his way out. I don't remember what fight it was but I think it may have been on ESPN FNF. And I've heard it wasn't the first time but it was the first time I've seen it happen. Maybe it was the first time for "big fights" or at least in a long time.

Once the brain is confused anything can happen. We've seen fighters still throwing punches.
It may be that the fighter is in LaLa-land but feels something in his mouth so he takes it out....maybe to breathe better in his state of mind.
            Who knows.

I remember Teddy Atlas talking about this fight. He was saying how everyone was going "Tyson is back!" but that he could tell Tyson had no chance in reclaiming the heavyweight crown. He was going on how his body language was all wrong and every time he slipped a punch he'd look down and away from Etienne. I don't think he looked too bad, but you can't be afraid of punches and you can't come in with the stamina to only fight 4 rounds.

wow, ur right. I saw this fight live and this never came to mind. well, of course because I didn't know who Roach was back then, but didn't realize how good Mike looked. He looked better than a lot of his fights in the early 90's and most of his fight in the latter part of that decade. Imagine what Tyson could have been if he hooked up with Roach sooner.

No, much sooner than that. I watched all his fights until around the Buster fight. And the first noticible decline was right after the Spinx fight which I believe was the last fight with Rooney in his corner. yup, just checked boxrec, it was the first bruno fight where u could see the lack of head movement first appear. All the legendary work ethic and training went away after he parted with Rooney. It's amazing that the skills he built up with Rooney in the past carried him all the way to the Buster fight. If you saw that one documentary you would know why the loss to Buster wasn't a surprise. Tyson's corner/camp was a joke. It was worse than a legit amatuer team.

What's pretty crazy and ironic is that Pacquiao first joined a boxing gym after listening to a radio broadcast of a Tyson fight that a group of adults were listening to. Now that man who made him get started is his fan. Story book material.

Etienne took out his mouthpiece as soon as he hit the canvas, then proceeded to act like he was "Lights Out" KTFO.
