Things that HBO needs to change

First off, HBO has treated us boxing fans well, so this isnt really me complaining. weve gotten some great fights this year, and non-PPV too. theyve really been stepping it up lately, and theyre easily the most important channel when it comes to boxing.
but I do feel there are some things they could change to make fights much more enjoyable.

#1-They stall way too much. I understand that most people are there to watch the main event, but I cant stand when theres an early KO on the card, and they spend the rest of the time leading up to the main event just stalling, talking about trivial things that barely have to do with the fight. Fans dont really give a damn about those small details on the actual fight night, they just want to watch fights! Instead, they need to show some of the untelevised undercards, that way the PPV isnt just a focus on the two fighters in the main event, and concerns the rest of boxing as well. and if none of the undercard fights were good/nobody cared about them at all, they should recap recent exciting/important fights, take a look at the rest of the division, etc.

#2-Wow, they take forever when it comes to ring entrances, introductions and national anthems. it seriously takes 20 minutes+. the introductions are classic, but they really need to speed it up. and its unnecessary to sing the number of anthems they do. one for the fighter in the red corner, one for the fighter in the blue, one for the hosting country...too much. Im a pretty patriotic person, but I really dont care about my anthem being sung at single boxing match, and its totally unnecessary if there isnt an American fighter fighting.

#3-The commentary is rarely excited nowadays. I watch older fights with Lampley and the crew, and they get so worked up. today, theyre always talking in casual tones, as if theyre afraid to lose their cool. thats no fun! and thats the whole point of the job! get excited, get worked up, pump up the audience. I dont want him to go overboard and start screaming about jabs landing, but when a fighter goes down or gets rocked, dont mention it as if youre casually interested, be WOW BIG SHOT PUTS HIM DOWN.
I cant stand it when theres a very interested fight/a brawl in front of their face, and they like discuss random topics, like the types of gloves theyre wearing or whats their favorite color. take notes from Bob Sheridan.

#4-Please show more replays. Im interested in whats going on in the corner, but replays are awesome, and really show the true effects of whats going on in the ring that some people dont really understand by the normal camera view. Everyone loves replays, they look awesome, especially with todays technology. personally, I would like a short slow motion replay of the best action after almost every round.

thats about it for me, I think they do a great job otherwise. but Im sure a few of you guys would like to chop Lewis or Kellerman.

I agree with all of those. The one thing the UFC does good is they put on good cards that move along quickly. Boxing should learn, or adapt, and do the same thing. First round KO?? **** it, the next fight MUST continue in 5 minutes!

As far as the HBO crew, I really think it needs a complete overhaul. Sure, I've grown to love these guys because they are always there, but they either complain too much, talk about irrelevant **** that has nothing to do with the fight, criticize the fighters/sport way too much or jock a particular fighter so hard it's borderline gay. Showtime actually does a better job at calling fights, they get really excited and are constantly complementing the fighters (typically), especially if the fight is a real ****er (think corrales/castillo or all three marquez/vazquez fights!).

ay, the best way to describe the HBO crew is negative. they constantly point at the bad things the fighters do instead of appreciate the good thigns they do.

Bob Papa is more enjoyable sometimes than Lampley, because he at least gets an excited sound in his voice.

oh, and they need to combine some of their weaker Boxing After Dark cards with the PPVs, so then you get exciting matches on the undercard of a huge name fights. because usually big fights have awful undercards, like Pacquiao-Hatton.

Good thread TS. I can agree on all points. LL is goofy, but he's so ****** as a commentator he actually makes me laugh. A lot. Kellerman is gettin more and more annoying wit his fanboyism tho. It was always a lot better wit george or RJ doin commentary.

George was just as goofy as Lewis, if not more so. I did like him more than Lewis though, even though he loved certain fighters. made me laugh with some of his comments
Roy was real good, I liked him doing commentary. Id like him to retire and to that positon up full time.

Kellerman has some real oddball moments, but as long as you dont mention Paul Williams or anything semi-related to Paul Williams or anything that can be connected to Paul Williams in any way around him, hes pretty good. and slowly getting better.

George was classic. He was goofy in an insightful way. The way he worded **** was funny, but he made sense and never struggled makin the call like LL does. And George was spot on wit a lotta his **** as it pertained to boxers, even tho he was always a str8 ahead power puncher. And co-sign RJ leavin the ring and takin up full time commentary. That'd be the ****.

Change Jim Lampley: That f.ucker cant tell the difference between landed and blocked punches, guy has no place talking about boxing and someone needs to give him some 'just for men' for his b-day, seriously.

Merchant: Old bitter **** who keeps coming out with these gay-ass puns before a fight, most of them are a)not funny and b) make no sense. F.ucker needs to sell his house and move into a nursing home, talks like he had a stroke just before they went on air.

Lederman: 'Okay Jim'...... Wanker, some of the worst scoring known to man, the more one guy is winning, the more he scores for the other guy, pathetic, bring in Stevie wonder instead.
