Paulie was holding on from early rounds, but it wasn't for dear life, it was because he had virtually no offense and no confidence in his hands to put out the combinations he needed to outscore Hatton - the only work he could do was limit the damage coming at him. Paulie can be cheeky with the holding and inside fuckery when he needs, I think he would have used some of that against Hatton anyway, but with 2 functioning hands he would have been able to mix it up with some notable offense, featherfisted or not, it would've made a significant difference to how the fight looked. Even the light work he did on Hatton in the first couple had him moused up under one eye and a little puffy.

Paulie's proven he can take flush, hard shots and keep his feet (most times) and his awareness (all times). We haven't seen Pac have to take a really good one above 130 yet, but I think his chin can stand up to a solid shot from Hatton. Hatton's got to land one, anayway, and I don't really see clean punching as his route to winning the fight. I see inside attrition, suicide bombing into Pac's chest, grabbing and hitting, holding Pac's head down to get uppercuts off, nasty **** like that. But Ricky says he's going to set traps and out-time him, which means he's pretty much dead if true. Maybe he'll be able to de-program in time enough to revert, then pray the official is permissive enough (because if he isn't, Ricky's up **** creek).
Likewise, I agree with your post here.

PM would have done much better if it wasn't for the smashed up hands, no doubt about it. There was no way of getting through the fight without holding, and I wouldn't put the holding down to Hatton having brutal power and Paulie being terrified of it. Not to say Hatton's power isn't good, but I'd bet Cotto ****s harder, and despite Paulie getting his orbital bone shattered (obviously a very nasty injury) I'm amazed that he went the distance and even managed to put in some good work. I gained respect for the guy big time after that fight.

The difference was he had two hands, though. Against Hatton he had basically nothing.

          I don't think it's a De La Hoya sequel.

          Or a Diaz sequel.

It's a Hatton Gets Owned By The P4P #1 sequel.

He is a rugged illusionist. And it took someone to be as skillfully dirty as he is to expose the illusion. That's why I think Hatton can still beat Pac that way - Pac doesn't have that level of experience of angles and tricks inside, even if they're working some on that, Ricky's way more versed there, and his footspeed is good enough to close Pac down and get him on that chest. But I don't see Ricky being steady and successfully timing Pac on anything. Hatton isn't Marquez, he can't make Manny over-commit, lateral movement will make the bullseye too elusive and he'll get punished that way for being a sitting target trying to get a handle on Manny's rhythm, Manny'll find angles and it won't all be about the left cross Hatton's expecting to capitalize on - when Pac has Hatton tired and ailing, he'll start loading up.

I still don't know why Hatton has so many queueing up to plaster over his obvious shortcomings. But. Ah, who cares. Hatton needs apologists. Wouldn't be fun otherwise.

Now you have manny pacquiao that has never been hit on the chin above 130.....david diaz and oscar never touched him.....and keep in mind this is the same guy who was wobbled by a chin shot in the 3rd round against oscar larios.......

i say at 140 malginaggi has a better chin than the pacman....the results/evidence speaks for itself.....

            your thoughts?
hatton didnt stop him.... that was a classic buddy mcgirt stoppage.... and how could we know pac chin at 140, if he has never fought at 140?

this is true, both guys like to come forward and aren't natural counterpunchers.

pac has learned to turn his opponents though, but hatton can negate that w/ cutting off the ring and clinching.

backing pac up is how morales beat pac the first time; that said, hatton will be walking into huge shots... depends on how hatton takes those punches

Paul's a candid guy after fights, and he said Cotto hit a lot harder.

Hatton has respectable power, but for the minimal amount of flush shots I see Pac taking in any open exchanges, I think his chin holds up. Only place I see him having problems is in a maulfest, getting worn down and, well, abused. But a decent referee should see to that by stepping in as soon as they tie up.

Could be totally shocked on fight night, but I see any attempt to be cute on Ricky's part getting him ripped up.

Paulie Malignaggi with 2 hands is actually an A-class fighter in my opinion. When healthy, he can box any ones ears off. I think he went in that Hatton fight with one hand because maybe he was over-looking Ricky. Maybe he thought "Okay, Mayweather knocked this guy out and Lazcano had him in trouble once, I can outbox him easily". I think Roach is crazy for predicting a 6 round KO, he is making Pacquaio very confident and I think the Pacman camp is really over-looking Hatton. The Hatton camp knows Pacman's camp is over-looking, that's gonna cost Pacquiao the win.

If Buddy McGirt was on Malignaggi's corner against Cotto, the fight would've been stopped.

                      Kev,

I feel strange kinship with anyone who can see the widescreen epicness in Paulie's best work. When I watch him box, I get the theme to Once Upon A Time In The West playing in my head. Magic Man in full flight is proof that boxing doesn't need knockouts to be aesthetically beautiful, a featherfisted stylist with the heart of a lion can be just as inspiring in his contradictory way.
The night he beat N'Dou for the IBF, man, and that beaming look of pride when he got the strap in his hands, I could tear up just thinking about it. Still one of the greatest thrills in a decade or so of watching boxing for me.

Anyway, FWIW, The karmic balance needs Ricky and his loyal fans, so I'm going to stop bitching about Hatton and the Hattonites. Part of me wouldn't mind being surprised and see Hatton putting a clinic on, anyway, if only for no other reason than I like being surprised.
