Tale of the Junior's (JJC and Hearns)

Last night we got to see the sons of two boxing legends, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Ronald Hearns (Jr). It is common for boxing fans to like these fighters due to obvious reasons, the familiarity with their dads. It is believed that both of these fighters are been brought up in a protected atmosphere, and thus their record showed no losses. I got to admit they both have skills and potential. How to develop them is a major problem...

When fighters with potential are brought up slowly and meticulously developed, they are exposed to different kinds of boxers. South pole stance, veterans with great stamina, brawlers, slick boxers, guys with suspect chins, or tough chins, etc. Prospects are brought up by exposing them to different situations to gain experience and eventually beat the tougher fighters. No harm done so far...

Last night, both faced an opponent with respectable records (no losses). Luciano Cuello and Harry Joe Yorgey. Cuello lost to JCC Jr. via decision while Yorgey KOed Hearns Jr, in an "upset". Now the questions are... who do you respect more after last night??? Who got more potential??? Who will have a better career???

IMO, Ronald Hearns did better than JJC Jr. Hearns just need to improve his style, mainly defense. He got beat because he keeps fighting with his left hand hangging and don't use it for protection purposes. Another boxer with the same defect is GAMBOA. Gamboa has tasted the canvas due to his style. Also, there is a question of stamina in Hearns. Is he ready to box for 12 rounds???

In the other hand, JCC Jr. once again, fought a smaller opponent who had no punching power. I mean, the size advatange was absurd. I thought JCC Jr was going to kill Cuello, but he fail to KO him. What worried the most is the fact that Cuello comes from Argentina, a nation that produces a lot of "paper contenders" with inflated records. Commentators said Yorgey lack power too. But at least, Harry Joe had a body and a size to battle Hearns. Not only Yorgey, but any fighter with cojones and a good right punch could had beat Hearns last night. But Cuello had no chance from the start; mostly due to size advantage.

It is obvious that Hearns needs to go back to the drawing board and work on his defense and stamina. But what about JJC Jr.??? Is he the real chosen one??? What fight needs to happen in order for JJC Jr. to show he belongs in the upper bracket and he is not just a last name??? Personally, I would like to see him fight eigther Vanes Martirosyan, Kassim Ouma, Alex Bunema, Joachim Alcine, Joel Julio... but specially Ronal Hearns. No matter who Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fights next, the opponent should be at least his size.

    What do you guys think????

BTW, I forgot to mention Thommy Hearns was a class act after the fight. Let's see how Julio Cesar reacts when his son gets KTFO...

I would like to see JCC jr. fight Vanes. Ouma would be fine as well. I didn't get to see the fights. I'm surprised Hearns Lost. Did he loose by KO or did it go to the cards?

All I can say is that I've never really watched JCC jr., so I can't comment on him. I have seen Hearns though and I wasn't really impressed outside of athleticism.

My problem with chavez jr is for one, all his fights are on PPV, they are constant mismatches against guys you KNOW cant beat him. He seems to throw every punch well, the problem is that he seems to have very little semblence of defense, honestly until he gets matched up with someone with an actual chance at beating him, i see no reason why i should use money to pay to see him.

Hearns took up boxing in his 20's didn't he? It's really an achievement in it's own that he is even a decent pro. Chavez also wasn't much of an amateur.

Oh well... Hearns got KTFO as you should know by now.

I agree both boxers are "late bloomers". Hearns started kind of late and JCCJr basicly had no amateur experience worth mentioning. I believe both got the athletism, size and "trainning back up" to succeed in the business. They may never become elite legendary fighters like their fathers, but they could make a decent living in boxing.

I guess everyone agreed that JCCJr. needs to step up his challenge. Like I said, Vanes Martirosyan, Kassim Ouma, Alex Bunema, Joachim Alcine, Joel Julio, Ronal Hearns... are opponents worth watching and are not the top of the division. Calling out names like ODLH and PAC is an outragieous joke for promotional purposes only.

Hearns definitely learned the hard way that carrying the last name is not enough. Hopefully, JCCJr. will grab his cojones and back up his PPV stardom fighting Vanes, or any other of the boxers I already mentioned.
