Italian Boxer Killed in Car Crash

Former Olympic and world champion boxer Giovanni Parisi has died in a car accident in northern Italy.

Parisi, 41, died when the car he was driving collided head-on with a van on near his home town of Voghera on Wednesday, said police.
Parisi, who won the featherweight gold medal for Italy at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, was WBO lightweight champion from 1992 to 1994.

He lost on points to Julio Cesar Chavez for the WBC light welterweight title in 1995, but won the WBO version in 1996 and held it for two years.

Italian boxing great Nino Benvenuti said: "Giovanni Parisi was in a league of his own. He was very precise and technically well-prepared, sometimes he just needed to touch his opponents so they had watch to out for a surprise punch."

Police spokesman Alessandro Casanova said it was not immediately known what caused the accident.
