Former champions Paul Williams and Ronald "Winky" Wright are scheduled to do battle on April 11, 2009 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and will meet each other at the middleweight level.
Today both boxers were on a tele-conference to promote their upcoming bout, which produced some entertaining facts about the making of the fight and further hyped their anticipated showdown next month. ESPN's boxing analyst Dan Rafael opened up a can of worms when he asked Wright, who's been inactive for nearly two years, other prospects he had in a comeback bout other than Paul Williams.
"HBO gave me six names, and told me to go get a fight. And none of those names other than Paul Williams wanted to fight."
Rafael countered, asking which names made up this list, apparently given to Wright by HBO.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer immediately stepped in, and after some delay, gave the list of the fighters, but only named five of the six names. They included Arthur Abraham, Venron Forrest, Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor and Paul Williams.
Was Floyd Mayweather Jr. the last name on that list?
Paul Williams, who currently weighs around 156 pounds, relayed that he was happy for the opportunity to fight Winky Wright, whom he deems to be his most difficulty opponent to date. Williams' camp has been in Washington D.C., and he stated he's sparring with nearly everyone who's willing to spar with him, from middleweights to heavyweights in preparation for the April bout.
When pressed on whom he'd like to fight in the future, Williams said he's tired of calling out fighters, so he'll let his trainer and management handle that area from here on. The name James Kirkland was thrown out, Williams showed no mercy.
"I'll blow James Kirkland out of the water. He's not even on my level
Meanwhile Wright, who's been inactive for sometime in the squared circle, admitted his first day in training for the fight was tough. Yet he now feels comfortable again in the ring, and is glad to be back. Both fighters see themselves as avoided by the big names in their divisions, and in Williams' case, he's avoided in multiple divisions. Wright put a good stamp on the making of this fight.
"No one wants to fight either of us. True champions fight each other."
