  • Heres to the Argentinian fighters!

Most people wont even look at this thread, but Argentina has produced some really good fighters that are often overlooked. so Im going to go over a few.

Oscar Bonavena 58-9-1-Most know him from his fights with Frazier and Ali. He was a powerful puncher who arguably holds the only knockdown over George Chuvalo, and actually had a very good shoulder roll for a heavyweight. very tough guy that had wins over Chuvalo, Zora Folley and Karl Mildenberger, and gave Ali and Patterson both a hard time. very good at dealing with those pressure style fighters, good inside fighter.
Jorge Fernando Castro 130-11-3-Tough as nails puncher who fought from Welterweight all the way to Cruiserweight. Most known for picking up a Middleweight belt when he got a split decision over Reggie Johnson. He made one of the greatest comebacks ever against John David Jackson, knocking him out dramatically with a counter left hook against the ropes when he was getting battered. even did semi well at Cruiserweight, fighting for the title twice against Jirov and Gomez unsuccessfuly, and getting a win over Imamu Mayfield.
Victor Emelio Galindez 55-9-4-Long reigning WBA title holder, who held wins over Yanqui Lopez and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
Carlos Monzon 87-3-9-Arguably the best ever Middleweight, he used his awkward style and great fundamentals to get wins over Nino Benvenuti, Emile Griffith, Bennie Briscoe, Jose Napoles, and Rodrigo Valdez. One hell of a fighter.
Juan Domingo Roldan 67-5-2-Not much to say here, very tough, durable fighter who was a hard puncher and was physically a bull. had Hearns stumbling all over the ring when he hit him, despite getting knocked down multiple times.
Hugo Pastor Corro 50-7-2-Short time Middleweight champ, who won the title off of Rodrigo Valdez, but lost it to Vito Antuofermo.
Julio Cesar Vasquez 68-13-0-Long reigning WBA Light Middleweight champ, he fought about at the same time as Terry Norris but for whatever reason that fight never happened. Had wins over a young Javier Castellejo, Aaron Davis, Carl Daniels and Winky Wright, where he dropped Wright 5 times in the fight(only knockdowns of Winky's career)
Miguel Angel Castellini 74-8-12-Won a 154lb title over Jose Manuel Duran, lost it quickly to Eddie Gazo.
Alberto De Las Mercedes Cortez 71-12-1-Not sure why I included him, but he was able to knock down Felix Trinidad and was the last person to beat Carlos Baldomir before Baldomir went on that huge winning streak. speaking of which...
Carlos Baldomir 44-12-6-Fighter who got surprising wins over Arturo Gatti and Zab Judah, and a very controversial DQ win over Joshua Clottey. Became Welterweight champ for a short period.
Miguel Angel Campanino 93-5-4-Very experienced fighter, probebly the best Argentinian Welterweight ever. most of his losses were controversial, except for the time he got demolished by Pipino Cuevas.
Nicolino Locche 117-4-14-One of the greatest defensive masters ever. He used to smoke cigars inbetween rounds of his fights, and never bother to train for his fights. Only had 14 KOs, won his fights almost entirely by nullifying his opponents and frustrating them. Won the title from an exhausted Takeshi Fuji in one of his few TKO wins, also had wins over Carlos Hernandez and a shut out win over Antonio Cervantes.
Juan Martin Coggi 75-5-2-Multiple time and long reigning WBA Light Welterweight champion. Very powerful southpaw puncher, who had a very effective shoulder roll. Had wins over Patrizio Olivia, Jose Luis Ramirez, Morris East, and a controversial win over Frankie Randall. imo, he would knock out today's Ricky Hatton.

those are the only ones I know about, feel free to add if I forgot someone.
no one thinks of Argentina as a big boxing powerhouse, but they have produced some very impressive fighters.

thats true, I forgot all about him.

hopefully he gets the chance to fight Vernon Forrest, cause he isnt really a legitimate champ at this time.

Argentina has produced some pretty good defensive fighters. They all like to use shoulder rolls.

Roldan was a tough mofo. Hagler was outboxing him, but he never stopped coming and he was giving Hagler a helluva a good fight.

Roldan got dusted by Nunn, and Hearns though. He did have Hearns in trouble though. He deffo could punch hard and take a good shot. Im sure Hagler said he had good punch in his post fight interview etc.

Don't forget Luis Firpo who was one of the most popular heavyweights of all time.

Pascual Perez one of the great flyweights.

Gregorio Peralta a very good light heavyweight contender who went the distance with George Foreman.

As ****** as it sounds Barrios might be a little underrated. He probably would of gone on to beat Juarez, and Freitas, if he had not got caught late in the fight.

ah! thats a good one, for some reason Barrios doesnt seem Argentine to me. Barrios does seem pretty underrated to me, he gave hell to a prime Freitas in a wild fight and was well on his way to winning against Juarez, he just fell apart in the end. Gave Guzman a pretty tough fight as well.

Ive never been impressed with Firpo, popular or not. I think Bonavena would have knocked him out without much trouble.
but I probebly should have mentioned him.

                  the other two are good.
