Shame that relationship declined the way it did. I idolized Naz, growing up. He could have done so much more if he hadn't thrown it all away.
I used to hate Naz but love him now. Shame the way his career fizzled out but I get the feeling he doesn't value the notion of legacy quite to the same extent most die-hard boxing fans do, otherwise he would have come back.

He came, he dazzled, he made his money. Sometimes I think....who are we to demand he carried on fighting to prove something to us? If he felt he was past his best and the motivation and aura wasn't there, what's the point of a half-hearted come back attempt?

Re Ingle/Naz - I see the parallels with the Hearns/Steward dynamic but the split sort of kills it for me. Whereas even now, Steward adores Hearns' and compares any fighter to Tommy. Those two will just be inextricably linked. Hearns was Manny's masterpiece, the one who will never be bettered.

Yeah, I like the Marquez brothers and Nacho. Again, I think the fact that he had them from when they were kids just appeals to me. I mean, the satisfaction Nacho must derive from watching the little boys he trained fight so magnificently as men....sublime.

Oh, ****, yeah. Not suggesting it was as tender or secure a partnership --- though, it did go back for time and there must have been a solid understanding at some point --- or even as successful ultimately. Just a personal favorite of mine. And the aspect of volatility is a big part of what I love about it in hindsight.

Naz was my boxing idol as a youth. I remember seeing his stretch broken down near a roundabout down behind The Moor in Sheffield back in the 90's. I was crossing over and I saw him sat there in the back, so I raised a teenage fist to salute him - he was too busy snarling and scowling at the passing traffic to acknowledge. Between that Naz and now, the contrast is striking. I think he struggled with the pressure building on his shoulders as his career went on, and when his momentum was derailed by Barrera, it became an opportunity to just fade away, spend time with his family, whatever.

Still a legend and a great champion in my eyes. Deathlessly entertaining, ruthless, vicious, awesome power in either hand, chin, ability to get knocked down, bounce up and smack the other guy out. Naz was the truth, for a long time.

This picture says a lot about the Hamed/Ingle relationship to me. The pugnacious, arrogant little savage and the wise old paddy trying to channel and focus his restless aggression, with initial success, but fighting an increasingly losing battle with his charge over time.
