Klitschko has to be given credit for the win. It was only his second fight back after the layoff and he beat a skilled, live opponent. He by no means looked unbeatable on certain occasions, but nonetheless he was still impressive, all things considered. I thought that Gomez had a legitimate shot at beating Klitschko, but not with the tactics he employed on Saturday. I thought that Gomez may have used more lateral movement and tried to throw quick combinations. He appeared to just try and outbox Klitschko in a more orthodox way, which seemed a very surprising choice as Gomez doesn't have a solid jab. I only got to see the first 5 rounds, as my Internet connection decided it would be a good idea to stop working when I was watching a live stream. I thought Gomez had a decent first round and decent fifth.
This should be considered a decent win, but a lot of people will have watched the fight and said to themselves ''So what!''. Partly because the fight wasn't very exciting and partly because they will class Gomez as no more than a decent heavyweight. As for Gomez himself, he will obviously be very disappointed with the performance and may question the tactics he used for the fight. The one consolation he has is that he showed he has a sturdy chin and has heart, something a few people were questioning. Gomez, when he's allowed to operate, operates well. But on Saturday he simply wasn't allowed to do so due to Klitschko's size, power, and his ability to use his size to his advantage . I think it may be fair to say that the Klitschkos' look easier to beat than what they really are, with Gomez and the Klitschkos' other victims only seeing the negatives without appreciating their qualities.
I'd just like to point out that I personally never backed Gomez to win because I want rid of the Klitschkos'. I realise that has happened in the past, particularly with Samuel Peter. I've been backing Gomez to win a World title for years, and still believe the guy is a very talented boxer whose past achievements cannot be erased just because of this fight. It might be quite disheartening for some people to consider that Gomez, despite the one-sided loss, would probably beat most of the other heavyweights out there at the moment. I see a lot of people mentioning David Haye's name as someone who could defeat Vitali. I don't see that happening at all. I believe a boxer will need to have it all to beat Vitali Klitschko. They will need a good strong jab, good hand speed, a good chin, good lateral movement, good stamina, and an arsenal of different punches. Being a big, modern type of athlete would be an advantage too.
David Haye cannot outbox Klitschko, and it's very unlikely that he'd stop him.
Haye might make for some exciting fights, but he will not beat Vitali Klitschko. He may well have a puncher's chance against Wladmir, but as for a boxer who can take on and beat Vitali Klitschko, I cannot see him yet. Haye has too many weak links, when you cannot afford any against a good fighter like Klitschko.
