Originally posted by Marciano 49-0I think Teddy Atlas, along with a few other negative, boring commentators, is hurting the popularity of boxing.
I don't think the commentators are hurting boxing as much as the heavyweight division is, Champions that have no interest in unifying the titles, and no competition for them to prove themselves against. (and when someone comes up as a possible challenge, it never works out)
The popularity of boxing amongst the casual fan lives and dies in the heavyweight division. If you think of the great years of boxing (where the casual fans enjoyed and were somewhat informed... at least knew who the champions were) there was always a star at heavyweight. Theres a mystique to the heavyweight belt, for instance, WWF used the "heavyweight championship of the world" as its big Wrestlemania draw for years, although there were no other divisions, and everyone always respected the HWChamp over the Intercontinental (viewed as a slightly inferior belt) talking more the 80-90s of WWF -
But back to boxing commentators. They all suck at some point, and then other times you learn to love them. Teddy Atlas was the only thing worth watching in the olympics boxing. Teddy also grows on you, i hated him for a long time, until i created the Teddy Atlas drinking game, (Take a shot whenever he uses a topical analogy an example would be if its saint patricks day and he keeps saying "He's got to move like a leprachan") any time he states the obvious "he's got to learn how not to get hit" Any time he says something Kung-fu Grandmaster-ish "before you can truely win, you must first learn to lose"
Make up some of your own people its fun, and you'll learn to love atlas.
Max Kellerman sucks, big time, he's nervous, too stiff, bias (in a non bias way if that makes sense?) but I like him now, he grew on me. Same with lampley, merchant.
You just have to learn to enjoy their quirks.
I've always enjoyed pappa and tesatore, they just sound good, reguardless of what they're calling.
I LOVE LEDERMAN though "OK JIM!"
Only guy i really don't care for is dude with ugly mustacheComment

Unifying the division? Vitali called out Valuev after the fight.I don't think the commentators are hurting boxing as much as the heavyweight division is, Champions that have no interest in unifying the titles, and no competition for them to prove themselves against. The negative public perception of the heavyweight division is influenced by people like Teddy Atlas who hate to see the top heavyweights being Europeans. Until an African-American come along and wins a world title or two, people like Atlas will say the division is poor, and discredit the Klitschkos or any other Europeans who hold titles. And sadly, all the silly sheeple who believe what he says (and other commentators say), will follow along with his bad opinion of the heavyweight division.
I like it far more now than before, because the world champions today really are world champions, not just American champions. Boxing has become more of an international sport than ever before.Comment

The HW division discredits itself just fine, the fights are boring often times mismatches that bring next to no excitement whatsoever, none of the heavyweights other than haye have any crossover charisma, its just boring as hell. The only fight im looking foward too is david haye/wlad, because it will be competitive.Comment

It won't be competitive, Wlad will easily beat Haye.Comment

There's lots of good heavyweights in Europe, and plenty of good fights that can be made. The April 4 fightcard in Germany has three good matchups:The HW division discredits itself just fine, the fights are boring often times mismatches that bring next to no excitement whatsoever, none of the heavyweights other than haye have any crossover charisma, its just boring as hell. Povetkin vs. Estrada
Platov vs. Genghis Koc
Pianeta vs. SosnowskiComment

Even if that happens, there is some excitement because haye is making it interesting with his antics, there is a storyline here, a reason to be motivated to watch it, i dont even care who wins, but it will be interesting. Meanwhile, all these other fights dont mean **** to me, theyre boring, and seem meaningless in this merrygoround of fights that lead to long layoffs for champions, or fights against contenders no one cares to see fight.Comment
