If u are heavier can u take a punch better?

I've thought about this before (even made a thread on it).
There must be a correlation between a fighter's size and his chin quality. Because if the higher up the weight you go, the greater the power the fighters have, that means you've gotta have a better chin.
I mean, at welterweight, most of us would acknowledge that Margarito has a truly great chin. And it's fair to see that people would say Enzo Macaranelli is kinda chinny.
But Margarito got hurt by Santos at 154, and eventually succumbed to the power punching of Mosley. So it's fair to say that he'd have trouble taking a Cruiserweight's punch anywhere near as well as a welterweight. But I doubt Enzo Mac would be hurt by a 147er or a 154er. But yet, his chin is derided and Margs' is lauded.
Kinda interesting if you think about it.Comment

Yeah, if you are heavier you ca take a normal punch better. However in Boxing its different... because if you are heavier in a higher weight class then the opponent will hit harder so the justify ends the means.Comment

I don't really understand the thread. Is the OP talking about random people twatting each other in the face, or boxers?
Mileage varies. But, say, a 135lber getting hit by a welterweight stands a hell of a lot more chance of getting hurt than if he were fighting 12lbs heavier and taking the same punch. But in boxing, you're not allowed to be (that much) heavier than your opponent.
Basically,
People tend to underestimate how hard pro fighters hit. Of course weight makes a difference. Boxing is defined by weight.Comment

Taking a Punch - from personal experience
In my second amateur fight I ate huge right hands from a kid who was much bigger than me. In that match he dropped me twice, one time I was seeing stars. About a year later I fought the same kid and took those same right hands but I weighed about ten pounds heavier. He couldn't hurt me the same in the rematch. This isn't definitive proof but I could feel the stability difference. By the third round I grew more bold because I knew I could take his shots.
You also have to keep in mind that there are different kinds of shots. Some of which work regardless of weight or muscle flexibility. A clean shot to the temple could black out anyone. An equilibrium shot off the top of the head could wobble even the thickest of fighters. A powerful smack to the ear can send a man's legs out from under him and even pop his eardrum.Comment

If u are heavier can u take a punch better?
___________
Dumb question. Obviously there are other factors involved, but in general if you punch a guy who weighs 300 pounds and you punch a guy who weighs 100 pounds, who do you think will be more likely to smile and then kick your ass?Comment

Thats not what he means I don't think, it's not the punch thrown. E.g If Wlad and Mosley were hit with a punch with exactly the same force behind, same blow etc.
Would the weight make a difference to taking that punchComment

I think it has to do that bigger guys, because they are heavier, the energy spreads to a larger mass than smaller guys. For example, the neck is very important to absorb damage, and of course bigger guys have much bigger muscles and mass on the neck than smaller guys. The rest ob the body, although much less than the neck, it may also help to absorb the damage, so thats why bigger guys can take a punch better imho.Comment

LOL. Wow, of course the heavier you are the better you can take a punch. It's physics.
The more MASS you have the more FORCE it's going take to move your head in such a way to cause trauma to the brain that will cause a 'Knock Out'.
It's the entire logic and basis behind having WEIGHT divisions.Last edited by deliveryman; 03-20-2009, 07:43 PM.Comment
