I was reading Tom Hauser's report on MaxBoxing about Mayweather looking for a tuneup before taking on a mega fight.
Hauser reported that Mayweather didn't want to compromise his negotiating power for the Pacquiao-Hatton winner by having poor PPV numbers so he wanted it on regular HBO. On the other hand, he wants to get paid super money for the fight.
Just being "good" has never equaled the big bucks in this business. Plenty of "good" fighters have had a hard time bringing the fans into the arena and selling PPVs. What sells tickets is exciting fighters that go above and beyond the call of duty to entertain. Look at Paul Williams and Arturo Gatti; Williams was the better fighter by far but Gatti drew 12,000 for his fights. Williams can't do that.
If a fighter can't draw, why should HBO break the bank to get him on TV? It's all about demand with any goods, and if Mayweather isn't in the kind of demand where he can sell X amount of PPVs, why shell out the money?
