What Gets Me About Mayweather's Return...

I was reading Tom Hauser's report on MaxBoxing about Mayweather looking for a tuneup before taking on a mega fight.

Hauser reported that Mayweather didn't want to compromise his negotiating power for the Pacquiao-Hatton winner by having poor PPV numbers so he wanted it on regular HBO. On the other hand, he wants to get paid super money for the fight.

Just being "good" has never equaled the big bucks in this business. Plenty of "good" fighters have had a hard time bringing the fans into the arena and selling PPVs. What sells tickets is exciting fighters that go above and beyond the call of duty to entertain. Look at Paul Williams and Arturo Gatti; Williams was the better fighter by far but Gatti drew 12,000 for his fights. Williams can't do that.

If a fighter can't draw, why should HBO break the bank to get him on TV? It's all about demand with any goods, and if Mayweather isn't in the kind of demand where he can sell X amount of PPVs, why shell out the money?

I hope people now understand Mayweather isnt a draw without a big name attached to his. He himself admitted he isnt a draw alone to reporters.

Who do you think Mayweather should take in this tune up fight? I don't think it has to be a bit more exciting than a Steve Forbes like pick. I'm thinking a Berto(very winnable & decent credibility) win would be perfect to build up Mayweather's next bout.

Nope, and as reported, it won't be a PPV. But Mayweather has to be realistic because he won't get 8 digits on HBO. Either that or sell out the MGM Grand.

Floyd'll just have to settle for less money if he wants to fight then. Especially if he wants it on regular HBO.

Why you comparing Paul Williams to Gatti? Paul has never headlined a PPV.

I think Mayweather IS a draw though

maybe not a Tyson or De la Hoya (or even Hatton(?)), but he's certainly one of the biggest right now

i get the impression he overestimates himself however

Whether or not you headline a PPV has nothing to do with drawing power. I know people who have never been televised nationally that sell more tickets in a venue. Pawel Wolak draws more fans than Paul Williams, so does John Duddy. Neither of them have headlined a PPV either.

I know...you gotta give Paul a pass tho. He's still a new guy. He isn't known by the casual fan. Gatti was Mr. Atlantic City. Paul's still building his career.
