Cotto was in Vegas the week of Mayweather-Hatton, lobbying for a fight with the winner. But Floyd wasn't interested in fighting him. Here's proof...

Miguel Cotto Video Interview (from Mayweather-Hatton weekend in Vegas)

Bill Emes speaks with WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto about the possibility of facing either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Ricky Hatton in 2008, how to fight either guy and more.

After Floyd Mayweather Jr. overcame a game Ricky Hatton and stopped him in the tenth round of their championship bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, "Money" Mayweather announced that he was going to take a long vacation from the sport. Mayweather, who admits he's become bored with boxing, is planning to focus on building his promotional company. He wants to step away from boxing for as long as two-years.

WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, who sat ringside at the MGM Grand, was not pleased with Mayweather's decision to step away from the sport. Cotto is under the impression that Mayweather is intentionally avoiding a fight with him.

"He has had great victories, but when you talk about Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather, he always comes up with excuses -- I'm not the opponent for him, I'm not ready for him," Cotto said to the Grand Rapids Press. "I earned all I have now. I worked for that. Over the next year, year and a half, I can take the big names. At 147 pounds, the welterweight division, to me, it's the hottest division in boxing today. Margarito, Mayweather, Hatton, Kermit Cintron, Paul Williams and me. It could be three years of great boxing. I just want the big fights, the big names, the real fights. I wish the rest of the opponents want the same."

WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25KOs) is not going to wait around for his WBC counterpart, Floyd Mayweather Jr (39-0, 25KOs), to make a decision as to whether or not he will fight him. Speaking with BoxingScene.com's Bill Emes, Cotto says he is tired of hearing excuses on why Mayweather won't take the fight.

"He always runs [from me], makes excuses on why he shouldn’t fight Miguel Cotto. I'm here for the big names. If he doesn't want to fight me than I can do something else. I don't know," Cotto said.

A lot of opponents have worked on the perfect strategy to beat Mayweather, but Cotto is confident he got the goods to pull of the upset.

"To beat Maywetaher, you have to put pressure on him, cut off the ring and be ready to throw a lot of punches, real punches - for all twelve rounds," Cotto said.

Cotto is slated for a return in March, possibly against Joshua Clottey (if he beats Shamone Alvarez on Dec. 20). There is also the possibility of Cotto meeting Oscar De La Hoya in May.

Hatton was the initial frontrunner to fight De La Hoya on the May date. After Hatton was knocked out by Mayweather on Dec. 8, the chance of meeting De La Hoya went from being a definite to a slight possibility. Cotto was one of the fighters De La Hoya mentioned as a possible dance partner for May (Hatton and Mayweather being the others). The pickings are getting slim for Oscar, so Cotto has a decent shot to land the fight.

After a huge 2007, winning important bouts over Zab Judah and Shane Mosley, the Puerto Rican superstar is looking to continue his streak of big fights in 2008. He's willing to fight whoever his promoters, Top Rank, put in front of him.

"I never choose opponents. I never ask Bob (Arum). They always make the correct fights for me. I'm going to leave these things in their hands," Cotto said.

Mayweather: "Cotto Knows He Can't Beat Me"

WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25KOs) is not interested in a potential fight with WBA champ Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25KOs) of Puerto Rico, at least for now. In a recent interview with Franklin McNeil of the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Mayweather gave his thoughts on Cotto trying to lure him into a fight by revealing his strategy to win. Mayweather, as one can expect, does not agree with Cotto's fight plan. More important than that, he doesn't feel the fight makes any financial sense at the moment.

"I'm not going to disrespect Miguel Cotto. He's one of us; he's part of the family, the HBO family," Mayweather said. "As a businessman, I'm not going to put him down. That wouldn't be a smart thing to do. I want him to do well, keep winning and building his fan base. But the truth be told, he knows he can't beat me. He knows. Cotto's remedy to beat me is pressure, pressure, pressure. That's not the remedy to beat me."

Mayweather told McNeil that he's going to use 2008 to focus on his company, Mayweather Promotions, by staging boxing events and taking part in the music and television industry. Currently, Mayweather is overseeing the tour for popular R&B star Chris Brown, and he plans to work with Mary J. Blige on her 2008 concert tour. Mayweather's company is also in negotiations to produce two motion pictures, and a book deal is on the way.

No wonder Floyd wanted a two-year vacation. He's also looking for HBO to give him a shot by offering him a few dates to show them what his promotional company can do.

(Bob) Arum wants his dates, (Oscar) De La Hoya wants his dates; I want a few dates too," Mayweather said. "I want to be treated fairly, give me a few dates. Just give me a chance and I'll do some amazing things."

Floyd an all time great? He doesn't crack the top 30.
ugh, only recently has it been "rumored" that Mayweather is coming back.
It hasn't been a day and already you saying he doesn't want to fight him?
