As DWiens said, he used to have more pop than he seems to now.

He is one of those guys who, when he really sits down on his punches, is a big puncher. However he can also move around a lot and throw arm-type punches that lack a great deal of power.

He's got good pop. He can crack, especially with that left hand.

If anyone has doubts... they should watch Tarver vs. Gannon when it comes on ESPNClassic (they play it fairly frequently, so it shouldn't be too long before you see it again)... he absolutely crushes Gannon with the left.

Yeah I agree Dan. When he loads up with his height and reach being used, he has some serious power behind him.

Thing is especially now, he takes too long loading those shots up, it's only when given the chance, and he isn't all that accurate imo.

So in most of his recent fights he hasn't really landed significantly.

Tarvers always been an average puncher.

Good point there, but Tarver has nothing left from what I've seen in his last fight. When he lost to Harding he was still a prospect, when he lost to Jones and Johnson I thought they were robberies. This time he's 40 years old, he's probably having a hard time making weight, and should be a cruiserweight right now. Five years ago I would give him a good chance to beat Dawson, right now I say he has about a 30% chance. He will have a hard time with Dawson's speed. The fact that he wants a rematch when he was so convincingly beaten last time, just makes him an irritating *******. This pisses me off and many Dawson fans, and fight fans too. Well if Dawson doesn't fight Tarver he would have to fight Tavoris Cloud anyways due to IBF rules.

He's not a huge puncher but he can definitely hurt an opponent with 1 punch with his left hand, he has a very sneaky left hand that opponents don't see coming which helps a lot.
