Khan: Hands are Higher, But The Same Flaws Are Still There

Credit to Khan for holding his hands up throughout the fight, thats a start, his round 1 was actually one of the best ever rounds Ive seen him in, until the bad habits came back.

Khan's biggest flaw is his sense of timing, ive said this before, and its still there. This is what exposes his chin to big punches. He doesnt concentrate enough on what the opponent is doing he tends to throw punches regardless of what the other fighter is doing, which leaves him open to get caught.

Now In round 1, it was one of the 1st rounds Ive seen khan watch and fighter and try and time a few counters, rather than just coming in with 3-4 punch combos regardless. But once Barrera had that cut, he went back to the old Khan, stepping in, firing all manner of shots without concentrating well enough on barrera and he got once or twice with a left hook in return.

Another thing is his pace, he comes across as a kid who is in love with his own speed, but I highly doubt he can fight at that pace for 12 rounds. He has this obsession with combos, everything is 3-4 punches, even when the opponent is covering up blocking the shots, he doesn't sit back and pick shots well enough.

People may drool over him now, I still think if a good puncher steps to the side and times him in the middle of one his clusters, he will be all over the place. If you stand square on with him so he can throw those straights, that's a problem. If you step to the side and time him, he can be hurt.

And he is well dodgy when he tries to punch and move laterally, if a fighter can't create the angle, wait for khan to create and angle himself when he starts skipping off the side and fire some punches.

Better performance by Khan though, although i'm not sure how much it means against an old Barrera with one of the worst cuts ive seen in a long time.

U gotta give khan credit for simply going in there with barrera
after being smashed to pieces by prescott

Fight didnt really tell us anything bar that khan is a fast hungry fighter
but still with the same flaws...

I expect him to improve with roach though

I honestly don't believe there is too much he can do. He will eventually get tagged in any serious bout.

He didn't keep the earmuffs on enough for my liking. He seems to have this habit of putting them down each time he gets in close to unload a flurry. Plus, in the MAB fight he didn't go in and out enough like Pacman does - you'd think Roach would've been in his ear about that from the start.

Also, his head and upper body movement was virtually non-existent. I really disliked that. For a guy of his size and speed, he should be practically copying Pac weave for weave when it comes to movement. He looked way too stiff out there, and wasn't rolling with the punches. Hell, even Calzaghe and Hatton have had more movement in the past!

I agree with your point about him throwing combos without thinking whats coming back, but he is getting better and more patient now I think under roach.

Thing is it was in his game plan to take the fight to barrera, when he would rest in rounds, roach said before the fight the game plan wasn't just boxing and using the ring. He said as barrera has gotten older he only fights with aggression for a minute of every round, so he said thats when khan would go missing, but when barrera rests that khan would attack him this in turn left him open to counters. I think khan followed the game plan that roach laid out for him pretty well

He does make mistakes, like the left hook that rocked him in the 2nd round was because khan doubled his own left hook, first to head then body, but khan didn't land the first hook to the head so barrera was able to counter and wobble khan. I think thats an example of khan just throwing a combination that wasn't there.

Roach said that khan had made mistakes at the press conference, and I think he is very thorough so I think he will make khan watch the video. I agree with many of your points, and I think khan is still very much a work in progress which is why he shouldn't be rushed into world level, he should tread water for a while, even though the performance against barrera was very good, he is not ready for a well accomplished boxer/puncher yet

What did u expect Khan do on his first fight back?? Come out looking like a prime Morales??? "but the same flaws are still there" yea does the word DUH mean anything? Nobody expects to see a flawless Khan...Its gonna TAKE YEARS of fighting and training to work on flaws FOR ANYONE...

I want to ask u a question...What was your expectations of khan heading into this one? You expected to see a Khan holding his hands up while being flawless??

It takes years of fighting and training to do something he already done in round 1?

Who said anything about needing to be flawless? Were talking about timing.

Ermm, I think Manny's balls need milking, see ya.
