“Fighting Words” – Marco Antonio Barrera: The Final Cut

by David P. Greisman - We open in a faraway arena, a distance from the casinos, stadiums and venues to which the faded hero had long ago become accustomed.

The camera cuts to Marco Antonio Barrera, 35 years old, 5-foot-6, adorned in a blue, hooded robe. He walks forward, expressionless, his movement a steady gait until the moment just after he ducks between the second and third ropes of the ring. His gloved hands pull his hood back, and he bounces into a trot. Those in this faraway arena welcome him with cheers. Some have donned sombreros, tokens of affection for a fighter who has come from Mexico City to Manchester, England.

Their applause is more for who he once was than what he is now.

Barrera traversed the Atlantic Ocean, crossing through six time zones to confront his past, to compete against the future. He traveled to this British city to face Amir Khan, a 22-year-old, 5-foot-10, from nearby Bolton, the homegrown favorite, an Olympic medalist who captured silver in 2004. [details]

Nice article. If Marco decides to call it a day I'll be sad to see him go out on this particular note.

can MAB retire while having a five year contract with Don KIng? wouldn't that be a breach of contract?

this article is bull****, it talks like Barrera has retired and given up, lets not forget Barrera was not beaten by Khan it was stopped on cuts, Khan is fooling himself if he thinks he won, Barrera is not done he wont go out like this he will get his title shot and he will go out 4 weight champion, Barrera was conned in this fight, the dodgy dave Parris let it go to the 5th then all of a sudden had a change of heart and ended it, hhhhhmmmm smells fishy to me, no doubt cowardly Khan wont honour this legend a rematch and let us see the truth.

Fight should have been a no contest. Many writers say that MAB is finished, he didn't go down, he didn't say "I don't want anymore." He couldn't see out of one eye and had trouble, even with that he caught Khan with a couple of shots that shook him. Now if he didn't have blood in one eye, Khan would have gone down. He has no chin. Its a shame what they did to him, Khan shouldn't even think he beat a great fighter. MAB still has it in him.
