    Amir's out to topple hitman

    AMIR'S OUT TO TOPPLE HITMAN
ABOVE: Amir Khan 16th March 2009
    By Kevin Francis

AMIR Khan is now right on course for a world title shot after destroying ring legend Marco Antonio Barrera.

But before that, he is aiming to help to plot the downfall of Ricky Hatton by sparring with The Hitman’s big fight opponent Manny Pacquiao.

Hatton meets Pacquiao in Las Vegas on May 2 and Khan has been asked to help prepare the teak-tough Filipino for the big fight date.

The 22-year-old Bolton bruiser Khan destroyed seven-time world champion Barrera in five rounds in front of 20,000 frenzied fans in Manchester.

He claimed a technical decision on the scorecards after a clash of heads in the opening round caused a serious cut on Barrera’s forehead.

The injury pumped blood non-stop as Khan produced his brilliant best with a world lightweight title fight now looming after he retained his WBO Intercontinental crown.

But before he is given the chance to add to his collection of titles later this year, his trainer Freddie Roach wants him back in Los Angeles to help Pacquiao prepare for that showdown with Hatton.

Roach trains both Pacquiao and Khan and the pair have spent plenty of gym time together, sparring and helping each other out during a spell in which they have become firm friends.

Roach said: “It is definitely a possibility that Amir could spar with Manny for the Hatton fight, yeah.

“I love using Amir because when you can handle his speed you are sharp and can deal with anybody.

“He doesn’t have the exact same style as Hatton, but work is work and getting sharp is part of the game.

“Amir and Pacquiao have very similar qualities. When they work together in the gym they are unbelievable.”

Khan, who will fight again in June, added: “I would love to help him. It is a friendship and it is good to have someone like him to look up to.

“He is pound for pound the best fighter in the world and if I can spar with him, it is going to take me on to the next level.”

Barrera, who effectively ended the career of Naseem Hamed almost nine years ago, looked a shadow of the man who won world titles at super-bantamweight, featherweight and super-featherweight.

The wound sustained by the 35-year-old needed 33 stitches and was described by his veteran cuts man Tony Rivera as “the worst I have ever seen”. But the cut cannot take anything away from Khan’s near-perfect performance that erased the memory of his shock 54-second loss to the Colombian Breidis Prescott six months ago.

Trainer Roach added: “I think Amir is my next superstar. He is a world-class fighter and that is why we took this fight. To be the best you’ve got beat the best.

“He went in there and took Barrera’s game plan away from him and was very smart. This fight was his first step to stardom.

“When Pacquiao beat Barrera, it was his first step to greatness and I feel the same for Amir.”

Before Khan stepped through the ropes at the MEN Arena, the sell-out crowd had witnessed a bad night for the Brits.

Welshman Enzo Macca-rinelli was stopped in the ninth by unknown Califor-nian Ola Afolabi in an interim WBO cruiserweight title fight.

Dagenham star Nicky Cook lost the WBO featherweight title in his first defence, being halted in the fourth round by undefeated Puerto Rican Rocky Martinez.

So the worst cut ever takes nothing away from the performance? And this fight erased the memory of Breidis Prescott? Holy crap, might as well let Amir fight Pacquiao for real to see who's really the best in the world.

Khan: Pacquiao’s tips instrumental in beating Barrera

            03/16/2009 | 12:49 PM

MANILA, Philippines – In a way, Manny Pacquiao was also instrumental in helping sparring partner Amir Khan beat fading Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera last Saturday in Manchester (Sunday in Manila).

Khan revealed that the Filipino pound-for-pound king had served as his inspiration against the Baby Faced Assasin and Pacquiao’s tips significantly contributed to his fifth-round technical decision disposal of Barrera.

Pacquiao and Khan both train under Freddie Roach with the 22-year-old Bolton fighter even serving as the Pac Man’s spar-mate while he was preparing for his megabuck fight with Oscar De La Hoya last year. Pacquiao knows the formula to beat Barrera all too well as he completely dominated Barrera in their two previous clashes.

"He (Pacquiao) helps me out with some good advice, and it's good to have someone to look up to," the triumphant Khan acknowledged in a report posted by the Sporting Life.

Khan found Pacquaio’s tips in handy against the 35-year-old Barrera. The Olympic silver medalist dominated Barrera all throughout and was comfortably ahead in the scorecards when the fight was stopped in the fifth stanza due to a cut above Barrera’s right eye, caused by an accidental clash in the first round.

"When I was speaking to Manny he said that's the way to beat him – hit him and move, hit him and move. And that's what we did," added Khan, who even spoke to Pacquiao over the phone after the fight.

"It has paid off by listening to the right people," he added.

To return the favor, Khan said he would love to help Pacquiao get into top form for his upcoming fight, despite the fact that the Filipino’s next foe, Ricky Hatton, is a fellow British.

For Khan, sparring with Pacquiao serves a double purpose.

"Yes, it does me good as well," said Khan. "He's the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world - and if I can handle him and spar really well against him, then it's going to take me to the next level," he was quoted by Sporting Life as saying.

"I'd love to help him, because he's a friend," he added.

Pacquiao battles Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas, bidding to wrest the Mancunian’s International Boxing Organization and Ring Magazine world junior welterweight title. He is set to be rejoined at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood this week by Roach, who had to leave camp to be at Khan’s corner. –GMANews.TV

Amir Khan hails Manny Pacquiao as the inspiration behind his brilliant win against Marco Antonio Barrera and admits he would "love" to return the favour by helping his training partner beat Ricky Hatton.

The 22-year-old dismantled Mexican great Barrera to record a fifth-round technical-decision victory in Manchester last night and atone for his shocking knockout defeat by Breidis Prescott in September.

Khan produced a slick, technically brilliant performance to ensure he was comfortably ahead when the fight was stopped in the fifth round because of a cut above Barrera's left eye, apparently caused by an accidental clash in the first.

The Bolton fighter was quick to acknowledge the contribution of new trainer Freddie Roach as well as sparring partner Pacquiao, who also trains under the American.

After the fight, Khan - who described the win as "easy" - said: "Barrera landed a few left hooks to the body, a few to the head and a few right hands. That's boxing - it's going to happen - but I felt so sharp and kept moving.

"It was the same way Manny beat him. He made it easy, hit him and moved, hit him and moved.

"When I was speaking to Manny he said that's the way to beat him - and that's what we did.

"I spoke to him in the changing room after the fight - he was watching it in America, and he was over the moon.

"It has paid off by listening to the right people."

With Pacquiao taking on Mancunian Hatton in May, Khan admits he has split loyalties.

However, the 2004 Olympic lightweight silver medallist is happy to return to Los Angeles to help whip his Filipino friend into shape.

"Yes, it does me good as well," said Khan.

"He's the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world - and if I can handle him and spar really well against him, then it's going to take me to the next level.

"I'd love to help him, because he's a friend. We have a good chat; we go for a run together in the mountains and stuff.

"He helps me out with some good advice, and it's good to have someone to look up to."

Khan completely outclassed three-weight world champion Barrera, who looked every one of his 35 years.

Barrera had suffered a cut in the first as he took several hard left hooks and a decent right and ended the round with a bad gash over his left eye - close to an old wound suffered in his last fight.

Khan maintained his superiority throughout, and when referee Dave Parris asked the ringside doctor to take another look at the wound in the fifth round, the end finally came.

Many, including Khan himself, thought he had won with a technical knockout.

But it soon became clear the cut was adjudged to have come from an accidental clash of heads, meaning the decision would come down to the scorecards up to that point - Khan getting the verdict with scores of 50-44 and 50-45 twice.

Had the fight been stopped within the first four rounds because of the cut, however, the fight would have been declared a no-contest.

Earlier on the Manchester card, Nicky Cook's first defence of the WBO super-featherweight title ended in a fourth-round knockout defeat against unbeaten Puerto Rican Roman Martinez.

Welsh cruiserweight Enzo Maccarinelli was stunned by a spectacular ninth-round knockout at the hands of unknown Ola Afolabi in their fight for the WBO interim title.

Yeah no crap. I actually enjoyed the PPV, not the last fight. But overall it was a good night. But I did get completely tired of hearing the commentators talking about Amir being the new face to boxing and all kinds of other crap like that. And everyone kept saying "dont take anything away from Amir's win". I will, MAB had a terrible cut and could not see but through one eye. And as everyone knows the fight should have been stopped soon after the cut, I'm shocked that Marco didnt pass out from all the blood he lost, when the camera zoomed in you could see the blood basically pouring out steadily. No worries though, I'm not a Barrera fan and once Amir ends up in another fight that isnt picked for him he will end up on the canvas again. Not that I'm saying MAB was supposed to be an easy fight, but MAB is 35, has not had a great win since 2004 and had fought a 1-7 fighter in his last fight, and he moved up to lightweight. Its not like Khan just beat the best lightweight out there, he beat someone that has never competed on a decent level at that weight.

Its funny though, the same commentators that were calling Amir Khan the next all time great were also saying Enzo was the best cruiserweight out there since Haye had left for heavyweight. But didnt have a lot to say after he got knocked out by a fighter with 5 kos in 17 fights. I had never really grasped why people always say the brits hype their fighters until I watched a card from over there. lawl!

Isn't that the most basic advice on how to beat almost anyone?
