    Exclusive interview with victor ortiz!

    EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: VICTOR ORTIZ
    By Ryan Burton

**********: What's up Victor? Cong**** on your knockout win Saturday.

Victor Ortiz: Not too much Ryan. Thank you I appreciate that.

**********: A lot of people thought your win over Mike Arnaoutis on Saturday was an easy fight. It wasn't as easy as it looked was it?

VO: No it actually was not. I didn't think it was easy at all. According to the fans I made pretty easy work out of it.

BT: I think part of that thinking is Arnaoutis only landed 3 punches according to Compubox.

VO: I didn't really get to see the replays or anything but it seemed like he landed more than that.

BT: I was surprised it was such a low number. Even if he doesn't hit you that doesn't mean it is easy for you to hit him.

VO: Exactly. That is exactly what I was trying to do. I watched a lot of video coverage. I kind of knew what I was expecting but I wasn't expecting that short of a fight. I can tell you that much.

BT: I thought it would probably go the distance.

VO: That is what I was thinking actually. When I hit him in and stunned him I said to myself "Whoa whoa whoa, ease up Victor. Twelve, twelve." It was like a number twelve was flashing in my head.

BT: A lot of guys end up punching themself out if they don't get the knockout in that situation.

VO: That is exactly what I thought to myself in the 2nd round. I had him pinned against the ropes and I was going to back off but then I hurt him pretty bad and I was like whoa he is hurt. Then I attacked a little more.

BT: A lot of people said it was an early stoppage. What do you think about that?

VO: I actually went back and looked at the end. It actually wasn't an early stoppage because he himself didn't know what was going on. They stopped it and he was looking around like what is going on. Then three seconds later he kind of snapped and looked in his corner and they were like why did you stop it? He said "You stopped it? Why did you stop it?" I don't really think it was an early stoppage.

BT: That last uppercut you hit him with really hurt him. His gloves just dropped.

VO: The referee stepped in at a real good time. He could have had a lot more problems health wise. As far as being an early stoppage you can probably call it that but I don't think so. I thought it was on time actually.

BT: How is life with Golden Boy as your promoter?

VO: Its good. I can't complain. They have treated me pretty well. They have shown me a lot more than just saying stuff. They don't really say much I am trying to say. I have been promised a lot in the past and nothing came about. Nowadays they don't promise anything but they do show me more than I expect sometimes which is a lot more than I had in the past.

BT: Do you have a date set for your next fight?

VO: I don't have a date yet. Then again my management team (Shelly Finkel and Rolando Arellano) and my promoter may. Right now I am just enjoying running on the treadmill and running on the beach and riding my bike and just staying away from everything. I guess you can say I am taking a break. I don't really take a break though because I am back in the gym.

BT: Do you think you may end up on the Winky Wright vs Paul Williams or Ricky Hatton vs Manny Pacquiao undercards?

VO: That would be great. I would like to keep my fingers crossed for that.

BT: How many times do you want to fight this year?

VO: However many times they put me in the ring. I don't really have an answer for that.

BT: Do you want to stay busy and fight 5-6 times a year or would you be happy with 2-3 fights this year?

VO: I can't really plan that far ahead. You never know you might get cut or break something. We will take it fight by fight and see where it leads.

BT: How do you like Ventura, CA?

VO: Its nice. I was born and raised in Kansas. I train out of Ventura. When I was 17 up to 19 I trained out of La Colonia. I have been training out of Hostility and Top Notch. I have been training at Top Notch since last May.

BT: I assume you like the change.

VO: Definitely. The people are nice there. They treat you with respect. I kinda always had this equality thing. You treat me with respect and I will treat you with respect. That is the way I think it should be you know.

BT: What do you think of the Ricky Hatton vs Manny Pacquiao fight? That is an important fight for you in that they are in your weight class.

VO: Its definitely something to watch. Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton are both champions. You can't really take nothing from them or take them for granted. You have to watch them and see what happens.

BT: In April you have another lightweight championship bout with Kendall Holt and Timothy Bradley. Those are some good fighters in your division. Do you think you are at the point in your career where you are ready to fight for a title?

VO: Definitely. That has always been the plan you know. Fight the best of the best. Nothing less. I need to stay in the gym and stay ready to get in there and box.

BT: You are only 22 years old. Do you think you should get a little more seasoning first?

VO: I'm ready now. I will take my time though.

    BT: Thanks for your time.

    VO: Thank you.
